Starting woes

So I have just put a new(to me) engine in my 82 GS. My old engine blew an apex seal so it had to go. The engine that when in it has good compression, so it is immeadiatly better. My problem comes from the timing and distributor. I set the engine at TDC and set the dizzy according to the FSM. I then installed and got nothing. I turned the dizzy clockwise as far it would go and got a little bit of life. After trying for 5 more hours, checking spark strength, ingnitors and plugs, mypops said why dodn't we just pull the distributor and advance it one more tooth and see where that gets us. So I tried it, and I got idle, not very good idle but idle enough to warm the car up with out constantly feathering the gas pedal. But it would not rev above 1500 rpms. So for shiggles I pulled the dizzy again and turned it one more tooth away from FSM spec. Reinstalled and it will almost idle but it will rev to 5k. So I need some advice. I know this isn't right. What am I screwing up?

How did you set the engine to TDC?
How did you set the dizzy to TDC?

To set the engine to TDC, take off the side inspection plate (side the exhaust and intake bolt to) and shine a flashlight onto the flywheel. Rotate the engine until the flat side of the flywheel is parallel to the flat side of the engine (same side, the intake and exhaust bolt side). Reinstall inspection plate, engine is at TDC.

Go to dizzy, remove it. There is a dot on the gear and a line on the shaft (or vice versa, it has been a while). Line those up with eachother and gently place the dizzy back in. Be sure not to jump a tooth.

It sounds like you are on the right track, just double check.

Also, what did you do with the old engine?

I tried both aligning the yellow timing mark and the flywheel trick. I am not sure about the flywheel because when the mechanic I had pull it off to resurface it put it back on he just set it on the E-shaft and hit it an impact for a minute. But I tried the flywheel method and by the posts I have seen here when the flywheel is aligned rightm, then so is the yellow timing mark. It wasn't so in my case. With the fly wheel in the proper position the timing marks on the pulley were no where in sight.

As for the dizzy, yeah, I lined up the tab with the indintion, just like the FSM says and installed it. I did this with every possible TDC I could find but I got nothing but a sputter from the engine. But when you say not to jump a tooth, that was exactly what my pops suggested we do to get more timing. And it worked. So something is not right somewhere.

As for the old engine it is currently sitting in my garage, it's fate is undecided.

Your mechanic had the flywheel off? Why did he have it off? Rebuild?

There have been many cases when someone has taken off the front pully and did not align it correctly.

There is a key that fits into the flywheel and the E-shaft. It can only go on one way. Someone put the E-shaft pulley on wrong. What your Dad said is exactly what I have done many times. I've found that the marks on the distributor don't always line up properly. If you mark the E-shaft pulley at the pin when you have the engine at TDC you should be able to get the timing close with a timing light. Leading should be about 1/4 to 1/2 inch toward the driver's (left side) of TDC. Sounds like you are pretty close already. I would set it so it idles then drive it and see how it runs. If it won't go to red line move the distributor slightly counterclockwise (advance) and try again. Be sure your vacuum advance diaphrams are hooked up to the vacuum lines. Not revving all the way could be fuel related issues also.

Do not remove and reposition the E-shaft pulley without reading one of these first.

The flywheel was off to get resurfaced. I was alwaystold that not resurfacing it when replacing the clucth will stop the clutch from setting properly. But it is nice to know that I am on the right track. The carb has been rebuilt, so I have no worries there(I rebuilt it, and it was 5th time doing so to a Nikki carb). And I know the fuel pump is good. All the emissions are removed, so the only ral vacuum line I have is for the advance on the dizzy. As for the timing light, The colored marks on the pulley are worn away, I only have the actually indentions in the pully to go buy, and I just can't see those when the engine is running. And I sadly lost my paint marker. But, as I said, it is good to know that I am headed in the right direction. Thanks for all the help and hopefully she will be on the road in a day or two.
