Starting Problems
Starting Problems
I live in Canada where the temperature in the moring is usually 25 degrees F. In the morning my car (1985 gsl-se) always starts. I then usually drive about 5 miles to work. When I go to start the car in the afternoon the engine turns over but it won't start (usually the temp is about 35 degrees F). I then check the leading spark plugs and they are wet with fuel, so obviously the engine is flooding. I then turned the engine over with the leading plugs out to purge the engine, put the plugs back on and the car started fine. Unfortueately the car has flooded twice in the last two days and I have no idea why. Hopefully you guys have some suggestions. I can't live without my 7. Thanks for your help in advance.
I did some playing around with it and i'm pretty sure that its the mass air flow sensor. I was wondering if I could swap an 85 mass air flow sensor with a one from an 86..The electrical contecter appears to be the same. the OD of the 85 is 2 and 3-4" and the 86 is 3-and 1-4". Got a couple of those lying around. Anyway thanks for your help.
trick
Here is a trick i do w/ my 85 se when it floods. There is a connector behind the driver-side storage bin that gives power to the fuel pump- disconnect that. While the wires are disconnected, turn the key(may need to push in the gas) until the engine turns over. Once the engine turns over, immediately plug in the fuel pump wire. This should work, it always has for me. The only problem is that this takes two people (one turning the key. on doing the plugging). Hope this helps
do you let your car fully warm up before taking off to work? the trip might be short enough to not allow the car to fully warm up and when you shut off the rpm is still high...when this happens to me my car floods badly...
The car warms up okay and if left over nite it will always start. It is when it sits for 3 hours that there is a problem.
Have found that if I push open the throttle with gas pedel it will start easier. When warm the engine is smooth with an 800 RPM idle. I was wondering if I should press the pedel to the floor before starting just to make sure some air is getting into the engine as I crank it.
As for pulling the fuel pump power leads, I am an electicrian and may just install a switch at the dash that feeds the pump. Good anti theift too! That way I could just crank until it hits then close the fuel pump switch to keep it running.
Thanks again.

Why not just pull the fuse under the dash? Thats what I do, pull the fuse, start it up, let it run for abit, then plug the fuse back in, and it works fine... but mine is an 82, I am not aware if there is a fuse for the fuel pump in the same location for the 85.....
I'm currently having a problem starting my 84 RX7. I haven't had a problem with it until yesterday, I went to start it and it won't turn over. I thought is was the feul pump at first, but gas was going into the carb when the gas pedal was pressed. Then I thought no spark, so pulled all the plugs and cleaned them and the were sparking. We also had 2 other cars jumping the battery. After 4 hours, still not able to start it, any ideas???
Ark1: It is very common for a GSL SE to flood when cold if it is turned off before reaching normal operating temperature. Like Bizarro said, make sure the car is fully warmed up before you shut it off.
When you start your SE cold, press the gas in all the way once, then release, and turn the key to start it. This should activate the cold start mechanism, which will make it idle high (~2000 rpms) at first, and then it will slowly make its way down to 800 rpms as it warms up.
Hope this helps.
