Starting my GSL-SE

Car starts perfectly in the mornings when cold but when warm I usually have to floor the gas to start it. I seem to remember reading that this was fairly normal but now I can't find the article I was looking at. Is this normal / what does it mean? My idle never drops below 1000 either (can't really tell anymore, tach works sporadically). Are they related or separate issues?

Several possibilties here. Coolant temp sensor is bad. Which means that when it is warm outside it's telling the computer that it's cold and dumping too much fuel.
Low compression issue. Failing trailing ignitor. Try adjusting the idle screw at the top of the plenum chamber clockwise to lower the idle and see if it makes a difference. Also if you hear the fuel pump coming on when you turn the key to the
on posistion then the AFM is malfunctioing. It should only come on when you start to crank. rx7doctor

I am fairly sure its not a compression issue because the motor only has about 10k on it and runs great otherwise. I don't hear the fuel pump when I turn the key to the on position. From my understanding the idle screw is the last step to tweaking the idle to perfection and not something you want to rely on as the first step. I just want to try to eliminate all other possibilities before I mess with the screw. I will definately have to check out the coolant temp sensor (is this the sensor that gives you the temp guage reading? becuase that seems to be accurate/ok).

I would also check that trailing ignitor. If it goes bad the tach quits working. And since you are having tach issues....
And the only thing you really should do before messing with the idle screw is set the TPS. Just remember we are talking about the screw on top of the throttle body, not the one over on the passenger side shock tower.

Right you are!

Air Flow Meter

Big barn-door type sensor behind your air filter that measures the amount of air going to the engine...

sorry, I'm a brickhead!! Also sometimes with "mass" in front of air...

the more I read the more it appears that the SE is supposed to have a fuel injected motor...which would be called ??

The SE has the 13B Fuel Injected engine, or gas injected as they used to say.
AFM or MAF, Mass Air Flow sensor.
