Question starter turning slowly!!!!??? help

On my 84gs (which i just got) the starter turns really slowy and not fast enough to get it running. The voltage also drops from thirteen to 11 when im turning it over. Ive never seen it run but the guy who gave me the car said the engine ran great until one day it suddenly started losing power and he had to keep it floored just to keep it running and now it just turns and turns but doesnt start. Its getting spark and its getting fuel. I havent checked the compression yet but when i was turning it over the sparkplug out it sounded strong. Can someone please help with this? I wanna get this car running so i can drive it.

Thanks
steve

It's normal to drop voltage when cranking, take a battery out of another vehicle and try cranking it over. If it does the same thing either you have alot of carbon build-up and need to soak the cylinders in mmo or your starter brushes are shot. Also pour a small amount of
fuel in the carb throat and see if it fires. rx7doctor

Wiring comes to mind for me.... I would check the wiring to the starter first, then the ground wires from the battery. Make sure all wires are good, and the connections are clean.

From there, I would try another battery or jump start.

Other than that, I think the good Doctor has covered it all. Good luck!

I don't have exactly the same problem, but I have always noticed since I got my 85 amp alternator that after I am initially cranked my voltmeter reads between 11.5 and 12 amps. As soon as I give it a little rev up it jumps to 13.5 amps !? What causes this ? It charges and cranks fine, but ALWAYS does this, no matter how long I wait.

Well me and my compression started it today and it has started every time since....ITS AWSOME. It runs really well now.(it hadnt been run in 3 months) What I think the problem was the spark plugs fouled (i cleaned them up real good) and the guy never checked the them so it just sat for three months. So i cleaned them and it started getiing good spark but the starter turns too slow to start it for how long it had been sitting. It just needed that extra pep by compression starting it down a hill and running it clean. It should be pretty clean now considering ive redlined about 6 or 7 times today and ran it kinda hard to blow out the carbon. Thanks for help guys. It feels good to see it running after towing it to my house.

Check the ground strap from the engine to the chassis. This will cause weak starts also.

Not sure if this is your issue or not, but some alternators will not begin charging until after the engine has been revved past a certain point (like 2000 rpm or so). Once the RPMs have passed that point, then the alternator begins charging normally. Nothing to worry about, consider it normal as long as it works.
