Unhappy starter riddle

riddle me this, i replaced the starter because it took like 10-20 times of me turnin it over then it would finally start took it to a place where they rebuild them he said yea your clutches are bad in the starter so alright i swapped it out with one that was already refurb, put it on an all it does is spin doesnt turn the motor over so i think mayb somethin's backwards or somethin, nope everythings tight in the right spot and all it does is spin, however i can push start it an it'll b fine, could it just be the solonoid? or is there some kind of deeper problem that i might want to look for btw it's a 84 gsl-se everything is stock, please help any pointers are more than welcome, i'd go back to the starter shop but they're closed on the weekends and lucky me i bought it just before they closed for the day

Try and take it off and check in the hold and see if you are missing teeth on the flywheel. Or maybe the refurbished one you bought isn't kicking out like it should be. First thing I'd do though is take it out and check the teeth of the flywheel. Then I'd take the starter down to autozone or something and have it tested.

i did somethin to kinda cancel that out also but i did look at it before i put the new one in, i also turned the motor over by hand in different spots and tryed to see if it would start there, but it sounds like the starter is spinning but not kicking out

If its teeth on the flywheel, it will make a HIDEOUS sound while its 'trying' to turn the engine over. If its the starter not kicking out alone, it will just spin freely and just make a whirring sound. I think I have the former problem.

Sounds like solenoid isn't engaging the starter into the flywheel. Park on hills for the weekend and do a rolling start into _2nd_ gear - go get the solenoid replaced Monday...

that's enough right there to look elsewhere for a starter.

it could be that the soleniod isnt seeing the proper voltage and not kicking the bendix out. check the copper wire from the soleniod lead to the inside of the starter. make sure it isnt broke or damaged.

i think ima check that 2morrow since it's raining today and didnt have a chance to do anything, but the only thing i dont understand as to y it would b that is that with the old starter it would spin bout 10 times or so but it would still start afterwards, but it could b some corrosion on the plug itself i guess right?

are you sure the first problem was the starter.. just because it won't turn over doesn't mean its the starter.
