Starter problems

My new starter seems to have the same problem as the old one: turn the key and you hear the motor spin. After three times or so, the gear gets pushed out far enough to catch the flywheel and then it starts up. When I turn the key to the 'ON' position, the voltmeter reads almost 12V. The starter is brand new. It certainly operates better than the old one, but it still has a slight problem. I have replaced the ground strap - which didn't seem to help much. The positive cable is still original, as well as the battery and alternator. What do you think the problem is?

Did you get a new silonoid as well? If not, Id say thats your problem. If you did, then Id say you have a problem somewhere in your wiring thats not sending power to the silonoid every time.

Like I said, try and trace your wires for the silonoid...Maybe its loose or something, cause it sounds like its not getting power everytime you turn the key. I dont really know, thats just my advise. Maybe you got a bad starter too...You never know., just cause its brand new doesnt mean it will work. My friend bought a starter from Schucks and it caught on fire the same day it was installed cause the damn thing shorted out...
