The starter could be bad, or the engine itself may be experiencing problems. Try swapping a different starter. If the problem remains, you've narrowed it down.

Are you saying that the starter and engine work fine if you jump start it? If so, then start with your battery cables and make sure that all of the connections are clean and tight (at the battery and at the starter). If the motor is hard to turn over by hand, but still rotates smoothly, try dumping some Seafoam down the carb to free up any stuck apex seals...

Ok,make shure the surface between the starter and the trans is clean,it needs to ground there, then to do a quick diagnosis just add a extra ground wire from the battery to the body, try it after that,if no luck keep that wire on and add a wire from the engine to the body. Make shure it is fat wire too at least 8 gauge, and finally clean your battery terminals!!! Hope this helps(it should)and good luck.

You have to remember the ground wire when installing a starter. There will be (what kind of car is this?) at least two wires coming of of the top of the starter. If it is draining batteries, make sure the alternator is good to eliminate that culprit. {tested for free at autozone, or similar} If your battery is draining still, you have a short in the circuitry. MAKE SURE ALL GROUND WIRES ARE CONNECTED. *check the wires off the batt terminals, make sure there isnt one supposed to be grounded to the body, right next to them on the fender well.
Also, check and make sure you have the Correct part. If it is not the correct starter, then you will not be able to turn over your engine.
Last but not least, make sure your starter isnt staying engaged in the flywheel. Put the car in forward gear, and roll it forward, put in neutral, then put in reverse and roll it backward. Then put car back in neutral and crank ignition system.
All i can think of off the top of my head--- more details?
