starter issue

Hey Guys,

In my quest to get my new 79 running we have come across a problem. After wiring up the ignition, and new alternator(2nd gen) we tried to start it,and ran into problems. With the ignition in the ON position every thing seems fine, but then in the START position we hardly get any movement from the starter, and we saw a small amount of smoke from the area of the brake master cylinder. It seems as though the wiring to the brake warning system heated up,and slightly melted down, but other than that every thing seems fine.We have isolated every thing that we wired up,and that doesn't seem to affect it at all.We tested the connector on the starter solenoid to ground, and we have a dead short there. Is that normal? What should we have for a ohm reading there?
