You can if do that, just got to keep a clean work area so dirt or debris doesn't get inside the engine. I like an engine stand because I have a bar stool and I can sit level with the engine and turn it around to get to all sides very easily. They aren't very expensive either. Check these sites to see.

The thing I hate about tools is you NEVER have enough and it just keep getting more and more expensive.

20x20 is going to be tight with 3 cars in it. Try to find a engine hoist that can be dismantled when not in use.

Thats why you get a 30x32 with a full concrete foundation, drainage, and 200 amps of power with a full welding/metal fabrication area, wood working area, car area, motorcycle area, and overhead storage loft like me at my Dads house .

~T.J.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and an office with phone, refrigerator, and food. Ive been known to sleep in our shop when working on my baby, lol

EDIT #2: BTW, Its not like its hella nice or anything though...It just has a lot of crap in ther that sounds nice. Like the "welding area" is just a secion of the shop where the welders are on a work bench to be used, and the griders and stuff are there. Same with the "wood working area". Theyre just where the tools happen to be .

Oh yeah...And I dont have an engine stand . Mine was home made from a pallete (sp?) with casters for the bottom, a Kenmore dryer drum sitting vertical for the middle (the thing inside that spins where the cloths go), an old tire sitting on top of that (spacer for height adjustment), then a piece of plywood for the worktop . However, I do have a 2 ton block and tackle thats suspended from the ceiling that I use as my engine hoist . When it came to installing the oil pan, header, and all that other stuff, I just hooked it to the hoist, pulled it up and voila. Engine stand for working under the engine .

I have my 20x24 garage set up for automotive and the basement of my house is set up for the wood shop. It works out well. Growing up I used my dads 30x30 concrete garage which was set up as a machine/fab. shop, at the time he was building streetrods and race cars full time for people. He mostly specializes in chassis and suspension design and fabrication, just does it part time now. It is very handy to have access to stuff like that.
