Squeak when turning car off?
Howdy all,
My 84gsl has an annoying squeak when I turn the engine off. It doesn't do it when I start, and I don't hear anything while running. Just when I turn it off. It's not the alt. It doesn't look like the fan/clutch..? I'm guessing it's my water pump?
I can't figure out why it only does it when I turn it off. I flushed my rad last week and added a bottle of water pump stop squeak. I thought it worked, despite my doubts. Squeak is back/ still there.
Is this a bearing on the pump? Time to replace? If it was belts, I figure I would hear more squealing at varying rpms. It's a bit embarrassing to pull into a parking lot with everyone looking at your nice ride and then hear a squeak when you turn her off.
I'm new to the rex, and I've been searching everything before I post, but searching for squeak and squeal is proving...difficult.
Thanks.

Noises are one of those things that really need to be heard for someone else to diagnose what the cause may be.
If your water pump is bad "Bad bearing" then their will be play in the shaft.
I have never experienced what you are describing and have many 7's and worked on many more over the years.
You can try and remove one belt at a time (Assuming) you have the air pump still on the engine and see if the noise goes away. You can remove or just loosen the belts so that their is no tension on them. If the noise is still there than start looking at engine mounts or loose heat shields or just shake the engine by hand. Might just turn out to be a loose component on the engine.

The noise only happens when the car is shut off. Taking a closer look at my belts, I'm wondering if it isn't a belt slipping as the engine comes to a stop. The belts are pretty old and the one around the air pump may be a tad loose. Pulleys seem tight with everything assembled.
I'll replace the belts and see what happens.
