Talking Spring is here with parts aplenty! (56k=no way)

Hey Guys,

I picked up my first two sets of new parts for the car and figured I'd share some awesome pics with ya.

I haven't actually received the airbox, carb or intake manifold yet, so those pics are just representative pics of another carb/mani that Rx7Carl has done, and the airbox is from iscracing.net's website.

1st pic shows all the parts that trochoid powdercoated for me. Amazing job he did, I picked the powder. It's "satin (underhood) black" from eastwoods. My rad panels look better than new, and we also did my engine mount, alt bracket, battery tray and some tubes. All sandblasted then powdercoated. Sexy.

2nd pic shows my order from Mazdatrix. After blowing the coolant hose to the beehive last year, I didn't want a repeat, so the bulk of the order consists of coolant hoses. Aside from those I got a totally bling oil cap and SS Clutch Line, intake and exhaust gaskets, belts, brand new engine mounts and coolant resivoir and a coolant level sensor. Basic stuff, but it needed to be done.

3rd and 4th pics show close ups of the rotor oil cap and the coolant resivoir mounted on the powdercoated side panel.

5th pic shows my totally bling beehive, which trochoid also powdercoated. I plan to switch to a 2nd Gen FMOC eventually, but this will hold me over until then.

6th pic shows some parts I already had from last year but hadn't gotten around to installing yet. The electric rad fan (courteosy of Wankelingbeer from the Canadian section) and another Mallory Comp 70 to replace the one that blew because of how I had it hooked up. Let this be a note to any of you installing aftermarket pumps... that check valve right after the pump = big restriction. Mounting the pump 2" away from it is a bad idea.

7th, 8th and 9th pics show the Airbox, Carburetor and Intake Manifold that I'm going to be getting from Rx7Carl. All of them will be powdercoated/chromed the same colour to form a matching system. The Airbox is from www.iscracing.net .

So what's left? Well I have a set of four '+' rims being powdercoated with a shiney/sparkly black powder right now. I'm going to put Sumitomo tires on 'em from TireRack. I'm also replacing the radiator itself, which I haven't bought yet. The battery cables (not shown here) were made last year. I made them myself after having made a set for two of my friends, from thicker copper-core wires and pretty good quality connectors. It will be a big improvement over stock, and will compliment my FD alt that is already on the car (cudos Silverrotor).

I've got an FC fuse box and FC Ignition coil going in, with "Transistor Trick" firing box (thanks to GSL-SE Addict and the gang of testers) to tackle ignition duties. I have a set of clear corner lenses and coloured bulbs coming in from Atkins Dan, and I plan to replicate IoTus' clear tails once I find a spare set I can hack with.

And that about covers all the parts for now

More updates to come with pictures in a few weeks.

have fun putting them on!!!!!!

Did you send in your old sterling to get it powdercoated, or did you get a new one? If it's new, can I buy your old one?

that stuff looks so delicious. i'm so, so jealous right now. anyway, congrats on getting your stuff. i'm curious about the carbie and oil cooler though. i thought your were recommended to keep powdercoated parts away from gas and oil.

Some powders are chemicaly resistant, many are not. You have to be careful which ones you pick. Unfortunately, I have not found any candys, clears or chromes that are resistant. I will be doing some test pieces to see if I can use a polyurethane clearcoat paint over some of the powders, testing the adhesion and durability. If the poly works, more 'bling' options will be available.

Anyone interested in getting thier parts done, PM me. I can usually beat anybody elses prices.

thanks for the info. may be a dumb question, but i think i'll ask anyway ... do they usually explicitly say that they are chemically resistant when they are or is there some other telltale descriptor?

i've been kicking around the idea of doing my own powdercoating, but if that falls through i will contact you when the time comes. you do what looks like phenomenal work! props to you ...

I originally got a "Sterling" way back when they first started... I think I got one out of the first 5 or something. Since then they've made improvements and advancements in both flow and coating (mine was originally zinc plated).

So I sent mine back down for a refresher. So unfortunately I don't have one for sale, but even if I did, I'd probably send it back to Carl anyway. I want everyone who has 'em to be as fast as possible, so no use in selling an old prototype Sterling when you can get the best they've got available!

They do awesome work. I loved my first Sterling, which is why I sent it back down for more work and a ported manifold!

IIRC 2lbs... but I could be wrong. I'm sure trochoid will chime in with the right answer

I snapped a pic of the FC ignition coil, FC fuse box and TT firing box for you guys too.

Ask Rx7Carl. I think he's been playing with the chrome powder.

Yeah, I go to get the car at 9am this morning (now that it's past midnight). It's been in storage for 6months and now it's time to take it out and bring it home.

There's plenty of install work to be done as well as lots of scrubbing, cleaning, and wirebrushing to be done in that engine bay once I've emptied everything out of it!

Some of the powders will state that they are chemical resistant. Prices can vary widely by supplier and type of powder. I have tried 2 different brands of chrome, they look great and almost like the real thing. The problem is they need a clearcoat. The first brand I was very disappointed in, the chrome came out no better than a silver after a clearcoat, the 2nd one was better, but still looses some of the bling.

Here are a few samples that I was playing with.

This is the powder I will be using on Jon's wheels. The pic does no justice to the powder. There is a mult-color metalflake in it and it only shows well in bright sunlight. Under the lights in the shop, all I can see is a very fine silver flake. The other colors disappear.

I've got a question.

In my infinate wizdom I took both motor mounts out of their packaging without taking note of which one was "right" and which one was "left"

Now I've got the two side by side, and as far as I can tell, for all intents and purposes they're identical!

The only differences I've managed to discern don't tell me much. ONE of the two has a small white dab of paint on it while the other does not. (Pic 1)

And if I look very carefully at the rubber, I can see that one of them has "4-1" stamped into it, while the other has "4-2" stamped into it. (Pic 2)

Otherwise they look identical (Pics 3 and 4)

Of course the mazdatrix page is wholly unhelpful
http://www.mazdatrix.com/mounts.htm

Anyone have any clue how I can tell left from right?

Jon- Can't help you on the motor mounts, but I wanted to say you are going to love the TT unit when you get it installed. Have your timing light ready when you do this, you will need to advance it a bit to get it back to where you want it. I still say that this is the best perfomance upgrade that I ever did to my car, even over the RB exhaust system or anything else. Total cost under 50 bucks, so you can't beat that with a stick! Let us know how it works out for you.

Here's pics of the first wheel. I hope Jon doesn't mind me showing off his stuff before he sees it.

Enjoy.
