some rear end questions
i want to know how strong these rear ends are. mine just went out at about 150,000 it did take its fair share of abuse but i was wondering how long the lasted in most cars. there is a different diff that i want to buy and but its from an 85 gs 5 speed with 171,000 on it. is there any good way to tell how strong they still are, or do they just kinda go. hopefully someone can reply to this i know its kind of an odd thread but i just need this thing to work again.
thanks,
kyle

Diffs can last 200k plus depending on how you drive, if your dumping the clutch and doing hard driving, well they will fail. They will last longer when regular oil changes are done and if
you use snynthetic gear oil also. As far as checking one out of the vehicle you need to inspect for wear on the ring and pinion. It's difficult to check the bearing thoug unless disassembled. i recommend that you rebuild yours if you have not damaged any teeth on the ring gear. And last question, how do you know that your diff is bad? rx7doctor

well we ripped it apart, and two of the spyder gears are kinda loose, they wiggle around, and they kinda bind a little at times. i knew it was bad cuz there was this bad clunking from my rear end one day, i drove maybe a half a mile like that then put it on a trailer and took it to my friends house, then we ripped it apart and found those gears like that. all the teeth look pretty good actually. i have beat that rear end so im not suprised that it went out i was just curious on how many miles people have on thiers with thier driving styles.

Completely depends on abuse and maintenence.I lost a 3rd member with a stock 12A just driving normal.Guessing the previous owner beat it and/or didnt change the oil.
My junkyard SE rearend with 150K miles on it has held up just fine to my 300hp TII engine for over 3 years.I drive it everyday and work it hard, although I dont do clutch drops and I feed it Redline oil every other year.
My GLC had a small bearing 82 GSL rearend in it for 10 years. It held up to a very torquey Chevy V-6 with absolutely no complaints.Again,no clutch drops and Redline oil regularly
