Some Questions!

Hey guys, i was browsin the faqs and archives and i coudlnt find all the questions to my answers.

So heres the situation. Me and a friend are building his 1st gen rx7. I have an FD and FC but only know a little about FBs.

the car we just picked up is an 81, 12A, rear drum. So its carb, and no LSD. We want to do a 13b turbo is this thing. We dont plan on doing stock turbo since theres alot more involved with that. Its going to be an all out turboswap making it simple without all the emissions stuff. I know a good amount rotarys, just jack **** about 1st gens.

So here are the questions...

1. To go LSD, should is there an LSD we can buy and just swap in like the GSL or GSLSE, does that fit in the pumpkin. OR, since we want disc brakes too should i just pick up the full GSL-se rear?

2. After doing a rear end swap...do i still use the same suspension setup, separate spring and shock...OR, does it switch to a coilover type spring/shock setup. Is this why when u find springs and shocks its either for a 79-81 or 82-85. Or will the suspension setup i have now still work. So if i wanted to buy upgraded suspension say shocks right now, should i purchase the ones for the 82-85 since i know for sure im doing a rear end swap. or is that all irrelevant?

3. Since, I plan on doing a T2 swap, what do i need to make the drivetrain work as far as transmission, driveshaft, and clutch/flywheel. right now i have the 12a, could we use a 13b GSL-SE or GSL...or would i NEED a 13b from a T2, or maybe an NA?

4. WHEELS. 4 x 110mm pattern...there isnt exactly a huge selection of choices for that bolt pattern. Are there any nice 16-17" 5 spoke, small 2inch dish in the rear design for this pattern? Where can i look for wheels, or what can be done to fit the ones we want? what width would i get as well... 6.5-7" in the front and 7-8" in the rear?

When swapping the rear end that changes the bolt pattern to 4 x 114.3? correct? so what do i have to do to change the front too? now that changes everything.

this is the look we are going for.

5. Where can i go to to look for maybe lips or kits, or wings for the 1st gen?

Gsl 3.909 LSD GSL-SE 4.1 LSD complete rear end is bolt in, get new handbrake cables as they are different.

The same rear suspension shocks and springs are used

Stock drivetrain can handle up to 300 HP then its into the Ford 8.8.

Oh GSL-SE stud pattern is 114.3 so its easier to find wheels, but remember your fronts when and if you go this way.

I am working on producing some bodykits, have some sampled soon.

For the brakes and rear end, there are two choices

1. GSL
This gives you LSD and Disc brakes, keeps your bolt pattern the same (so you can use whatever wheels you have), and should bolt right in IF you get one from the same year as your car. They changed something about the driveshaft at one point, though I can't remember what or when.

2. GSL-SE
This will also give you LSD and disc brakes (vented instead of solid) but it will change your bolt pattern AND your rear end gear ratio. This will throw your speedometre off a bit. And since you're changing the bolt pattern you'll have to buy new rims for the back. So either you'll have different rims front and back, or you'll have to change out the front spindles for GSL-SE spindles as well. The good news is that all '84-'85 spindles for the front are the same, so if you can't find GSL-SE spindles, get any '84-'85 ones and just install GSL-SE discs, bearings and calipers on them. This will give you the 4x4x5" bolt pattern you want all around.
