Haven't had a day off in 5 months!!!!
"I used to have a real job, but I hate working for other people."
That's me. Couple of degrees in Aero Engineering, had a brief trial period working for Boeing, but gave it up recently after 36 years. Now I focus on the more important stuff in my shop at home. Before I retired, they never told me I would never get another day off!

I am a self employed carpenter/handyman in Atlanta. Sure beats workin for the man! I'm also a newbie to this forum, and I find it very informative and educational. You guys really know your ****!
I have an '83 RX7, gotten from the original owner (one of my customers). It needs an engine, which I plan on doing here real soon. He garaged it all it's life, and it is in mint condition! (BTW, he gave it to me as a tip) I'll post pics as soon as it's warm enough to wash it.

just warning you before hand. i HIGHLY recommend NOT going to UTI. i planned on going to UTI directly out of highschool a couple of years ago with my friend. a few other guys from our school have went and were going from our graduating class. every guy from our graduating class went before we did and they all got screwed over. then an older friend of mine went to the UTI motorcycle school in orlanda and i started asking him about it. he said he has friends in the cars UTI schools. from what i gathered from him the school doesnt even care about teh students, all they care about is making money.
i strongly suggest going a different route. since then i have explored many possibilities, done a lot of research, and changed my mind of what i want to go to school for. the guy i was supposed to move to orlando with moved to wyoming and went to WYOTECH. they have a better reputation than UTI anyways. he graduated this last december, he is currently unemployeed. he has been trying to get jobs anywhere and everywhere. one thing i found out from calling dealerships and shops, it doesnt matter where you go to school, UTI or a community college. its all about how you apply yourself. i have connections at a BMW dealer and they said theyd hire someone from my local non accredited college just as quickly as UTI. thats something to take into consideration.
i had a friend go to that college and hes worked at a customs toyota/nissa shop and now works at a honda dealership.
i would just NEVER even consider going to UTI. its WAAYY overpriced and way over rated. besides, coming from there all you will be able to do is work at a dealership, the same if you went to a community college.
i went to a tech school about 45 minutes from me and looked into their automotive department. they totally set me back. they are BY FAR the best set up ive ever seen for racing/motorsports. the way they run the program you definately know they care too. you have to pass an interview proving to them you are really motivated or they wont let you in the class, no matter how much money you have. with UTI, theyd let you in as long as you paid them, they dont care.
what kind of a career are you wanting to do? dealership? customs shop? race team? etc?

I've always wondered what the general opinion of a Rx7 to the common police officer was. I mean it's held higher than the 16 yr old with his first Honda right??? We are definitely different people. Dont you agree?

ASE certified(engine building, air brakes, drive train) diesel mechanic, auto mechanic(non certified, because of lack of knowledge of electronic diagnosis, another reason i am not a master diesel tech), just received my hazmat CDLs, and heavy equipment operators license(e3), I am also taking classes in welding, advanced automotive diagnostics, automotive computers and high performance engines during my days off. I also teach a side class at the local technical school about rotary engines.
But my job is just driving a coal truck for a local coal company on Tuesday, thrusday and friday. I co-manage the service department on Monday Wendsday, and Saturday morning.

I am a site manager for Lindsey & Osborne Partnership. We are a Railcar Storage company that has DOD affiliates. When I'm not moving DOD "toys" by rail, I get to play with them on drill weekends.

shop manager for an automotive skills shop
I work for uncle sam running a "skills and development center" in laymans terms this means I run an auto hobby shop, and a wood hobby shop and try to teach the squids on this base how not to cut off their fingers with the power tools
so this means I get paid to teach people how to repair their cars, lots of fun, except when ever the ricer crowd shows up on the weekends
FWIW to any squids or ex squids... I am a former Marine, that should tell you why I work on a navy base somebody got to save all the ducks, and squids from themselves snickers, laughs
