So, My Windshild wiper rack seized...
So, My Windshild wiper rack seized...
Locked up solid. So violently, in fact, it buned two rather nasty looking divots into the motor, pretty much destroying it in the process.
Now i have an 1982 GX model ( canada ), and pulled a rack out of an 1984 GSL. the dimensions are exactly the same so it bolted in no problem.
but there is a little bit of a difference, the 1984 wiper rack turns in the opposite direction of the originall 1982 rack. SO now when imy wipers are off, they sit vertical, 90 degrees from the bottom of the windshield, and the stroke =goes down/up and not up/down.
My guess is teh wrires were crossed between the 1982 and 1984 model years... WHy on earth they would change this i don't know...
Has anyone had this issue before? Is there a diagram that shows me which wires need to be crossed to reverse the motor's direction so my wipers work like normal?

Sorry but I find it rather comical.
Anyways, have you tried re-wiring or re-building the motors so that they somehow sit differently? If you flipped the motor for the rack over so it sat down and the up would be down and the down would be up... I'm not sure how it is constructed but it seems as though you're going to have to do some shadetree engineering.

I don't know if there is a wiring difference between the models or not. Are you sure you didn't connect the scissor arms wrong, or set the wiper arms in the wrong position?

In answer to your questions. One the way teh motor connects the thte rack, you can't "flip " it,
As for connecting the scissor arms wrong, the way it looks to me theres pretty much only 1 way to connect them. even so if you are standing aon teh front bumper looking at teh windshield, the wiper's stroke is normally up and to the right, then down and to the left. WHen you turn teh wipers off they return to the "start" position.
I am going to look at it, i did consider the scissor arm was bolted to teh motor at the wrong start angle, but it shouldn't matter all that much if the motor is turning the same way would it?
the scissor arms were set a certain way so i could get it back into position the easiest since its a tight fit.

I remember having a similar problem years ago with a RX3, play with the gears on the wiper arms and scissor arms, from memory if you change the gear psoition it will fix the problem.
I seriously doubt there is any difference with the models as the cost would be prohibitive unless there was a problem with the parts and wipers are one of the few reliable parts on an FB/SA. lol
