'83 12A engine into '79
Hey guys,
I just started to yank out the engine in my '79 and '83 RX-7's, the '83 is a total heap of ____ * . My '79 is the only car salvagable. I need to get my '83's running engine into the '79's body but I am concerned on how I am going to get the electronic ignition to work as it looks as if it is wired into the engine harness. From my looking all that goes into the drivers side firewall with the guage cluster and all the goodies underneath the dash.
I don't want to have to conver the Electronig Ignition to Points for my '79 and I don't want to use the '83's harness either.
I just want to drop the '83's engine into the '79 and run everything as was on the '83's long block. But I am not sure I have all the wiring to do so.
Has anyone ever done a swap like this before and if so what were the nessesary steps to get it completed. I am just perplexed on this situation.
Yes this is my first engine swap and I am a noob at best.
If you have pictures of how to accomplish this that would be most helpful as well.
I appreciate it,
Dan.

Uhhh....Did you check the FAQ? Or try a search? It's been done NUMEROUS times, and is probabally the most performed upgrade to the 12A. Right after that is the beehive to FMOC mod.
You're going to HAVE to do some wiring work if you don't want to swap dizzy's. If you want just plug in, then swap the points dizzy into the 83 motor.

My only question I have is wiring the '79's chassis harness (left side harness that poweres the lights, connects to the engine harness.... etc) and getting all the Tach, fuel, oil pressure, volts.... etc to work.
I still have the '83's engine harness attached and full emissions. In order to get this to work properly do I need to detach the '83's engine harness and put on the '79's engine harness. How will all the emissions stuff work since I don't have the '83's emissions computer and wiring harness. Do I just need to remove the rats nest and see what hooks where. What about the Charcoal canister? The '79 didn't have one. How do I use it and how to run it?
I'm so lost it's not funny. I'm going to goto Electronic Ignition with Direct fire and I have that planned out so that isn't a question anymore.
My only question is now wiring the '83's engine into the '79's chassis harness. How is it done.
Since this is going to be my Daily Driver I don't want to FUBAR anything or take corners that might turn around to bite me in the rear later on.
I already feel retarted so don't make me feel anymore special. I have thought it threw, thats why I came here to ask. It is puzzling me. This is my first engine swap to a later year and wiring is my only problem.
If you can help me out legit then please do, IE links, personal advice... etc. Please no bashing as I'm learning and trying to.

My current 12A motor is from an '83. What I did was totally ditch all the emmisions controls from the '83 engine and just use the shortblock and intake/exhaust manifolds. The rest came from my '79: carb, alternator, wiring, etc. It helped that I had already changed the wiring over to electronic ignition before I did the swap though. It's really not a big deal to change over to electronic ignition on the '79, it's like an hour job, tops. Take a gander at this link for a simple how-to:
