So it comes to this...
I've tried to avoid it but the truth of the matter is clear to me now.
My car will never be quiet enough for the street until I get some kind of chambered muffler. I tried running the RB header + RB mini silencer + Magnapack silencer + Magnaflow single in/dual out muffler.
Holy hell it was loud. Too loud for the street, particularly here where the police have started really cracking down on loud car exhausts. Harley Davidson motorcycles seem immune to this crackdown, but don't get me started on that issue.
So now that I've come to this realization, help me out here. What do y'all think of the Magnaflow XL 'turbo' mufflers? I was thinking that if I got the one that is 3" in and dual 2.5" out that the larger tubing (I'm running 2.25 ID right now) would offset somewhat the flow loss from the chambers and that if I don't have any exhaust restrictions until the muffler that any loss in power would be minimal.
Thoughts? Any suggestions on a better flowing chambered muffler? Any experience with the Magnaflow XL?

I'm having a hard time understanding why your engine is so loud. Is it ported or something? It doesn't say in your signature. As far as exhausts go, well... You know what I'm gonna recommend: The RB full SP system. It's fairly quiet and sounds great.

It's ******* loud, man. If I could get the RB system I would but since I'm in Canada, it's basically double the price just to get it here. Sorry, but I'm not willing to pay $1600 for an exhaust. If I had $1600 laying around to spend on the car my first call would be to Jim Susko and my second would be to RX7Carl.

Wow, that really sucks. How close are you to the US border? Maybe you could have it shipped to a forum member up north and have them meet you half way or something?

Damn, it did start!
there is no reason for a bike to be loud. My dad's goldwing is whisper quiet.

No, I'm stuck with a Magnaflow or other chambered muffler since that's what I can readily get. I was hoping that at least one of us had some experience with them and could recommend them or not.

I know what you mean, I have a RB road race header leading into a hallow CAT then 2.5" pipping into a 2.5" Magnaflow with dual 3" outlets. Oh boy its loud, but ive luckily never been hassled by the cops. I guess cause i have a 25 yr old car. Im looking at the edelbrock SDT mufflers right now though, from the diagrams they look like they have some nice baffeling.

i have a RB header, presilencer, and the muffler the PO had AutoPro install, part #N231-40-500, its really quiet, i can hear the intake sucking air during normal city driving.
but yeah, without that presilincer, damn is it loud, i was afraid to drive it for fear of getting pulled over, you know its bad when you can hear the exhaust echoing off the buildings as your driving

If it's not half bad I may just go this route.

its been on there for at least 3 or 4 years, i've had the car for 2 years, hasn't gotten much louder, though it wasn't a cheap muffler, i have the work order and the price is $264. i just recently put the presilencer on, and with it, the tone is pretty nice, kinda like a purr at idle, and at WOT you can here it inside the car, but it doesn't drown out the sound of the air moving past the car or the intake, hard to descibe, i think it sounds nice, not ricey or anything

That Harley immunity thing bugs me too.

I have the RB system on my 12a, honestly I think if you want a quiet exhaust that performs. RB is your best bet, I know its expensive (I believe it ended up being like 1200 CDN for mine), but it will last and last. Now on the other hand, the weber 45dcoe im running is easily about 5x louder than the exhaust it sounds MEAN...

run straight pipe to an WRX, EVO, FD, STi mufflers. that will solve it. you can get that sht for free too if you just ask around or have any friends that have those cars.

i dont see how it is loud with all that in there. My car has stock manifold then a straight pipe the a flowmaster 80's series and it sounds great. but its not very loud either.

You should buy just the RB muffler and have that mated up to your system. The muffler is what really does the work on their systems. The presilencer doesn't really do a whole lot. Getting the muffer sent into canada shouldn't be too bad. Just make sure they don't send by UPS.

You said you already have the header and presilencer, just get the RB muffler. You're a good chunk of the way there, and the muffler alone won't break you too bad. $256USD... at 85c/dollar = $305CDN
Plus shipping and brokerage you're probably looking at just under $400ish.
You've already got the other two parts of the system. Might as well finish it off. Other than that, all I can suggest is to get a recommendation from your local muffler shop or even a "stock replacment" muffler from them. Sure you won't get as much flow, but you still get like 15% increase over stock by having the header and presilencer and removing the cats.

85rotarypower beat me to it, but I wanted to add that Mazdatrix carries RB stuff. It doesn't seem like much of a difference, but you can call them to arrange certain types of shipping, whereas I've had a bit of trouble convincing RB to change their shipping method.
I've never tried to ask them to send it USPS, but if they can, you'll save a ton on brokerage.
