smoked the wrong thing
So my dad was in town, and I wanted to show off by burrning a little rubber in a parking lot. I hadn't actually tried it until then. I reved up to about 4K and dumped the clutch, but no tires spun. The clutch smoked and smelled like chicken according to my son. The engine maintained 5 to 6k but the clutch just slipped and smoked. So I ordered a remanufactured OEM clutch disk for 50 bucks since the old one hadn't it rivets yet. I figure, the pressure plate works now, the bearing is still good; why spend 200 on the whole kit.

Wow, if it was that bad, you might need to get the new pressure plate, and have the flywheel resurfaced anyway. All that heat would create heat spots on the flywheel and pressure plate that could hinder the performance of the new clutch plate. Also, as a rule of thumb, I typically try and fix and or replace as much as possible while Im in there. For instance, resurface the flywheel, replace the seals on the tranny, the rear main seal, and all the associated bearings in there whenever I replace a clutch. Theres no real point to going in there and having it all at your finger tips, but not doing it while youre in there. The rear main seal was like $11, the transmission seal kit was like $11, and the bearings came with my clutch. Get a clutch kit from ClutchMasters.com Their kits are priced pretty well.

Good advice, thanks. I hadn't looked at the rear main seal, which does leak. I will definitely do that and the transmission seals. I also appreciate your advice about the ordering parts on the Web, but I really try to support local business whenever possible. I'll see how resurfacing the flywheel and pressure plate work.

You can get the transmission seal kit from RB HERE.
You can get the Clutch Masters kit HERE if you have an 83-85 or HERE if you have a 79-82..
Im sure you can find the rear main seal at a local auto parts store (at least I did).

PS - Those kits are the disc, pressure plate, bearings, and alignment tool. The picture below is for an Acura, but you get the idea .

Don't ever buy reman clutches. When i worked at aparts store a guy got his installed there and the clutchwas shot by the time he got home. Spend the extra money. If your gonna spend the time pulling the tranny you might as well replace everything.

I got this disc,2 months of actual use,
I was gonna keep the pressure plate but I want a 2500 PSI one with a 6 puck unsprung ceramic/bronzed lining duel friction.
I can either sell this with my Presure plate, or just sell it alone.

Hmmmm... when I read this thread title I remembered the time I was seriously drunk at my friend's house party in grade 9, and I smoked parsley that my friends told me was pot. Your minor embarassment pales in comparison to that, so ha.
