I had option #1 happen on gsl-se addict's list happen. I got smoke inside and out and it distinctly smelled like burning plastic. It sounds stupid to say but its white and your first thought would be coolant. It fried the grounds for anything that was running while it was connected. It also burned my manual choke cable (dont throw this out if you did, I managed to attach a new cable to mine) and my hand brake lines, which Im pissed about cause Victoria British's hand brake lines are slightly different enough that they dont fit. Also, part of the smoke was from the cooking choke line laying across one of my plastic vent tubes. Kinda suprised I didnt have a fire.

I had smoke under my dash that burned up a few of my wires on my Microtech. Come to find out after my engine was rebuilt the engine was not grounded. What happens if motor is not grounded, the electrical current goes crazy all over the place, and trys to find anything it can to ground to, so it burns things up such as your fusable links, alternators, batteries, ECU's Etc...

The middle fusable link is thcker than the other links. You can buy them new from Mazda for like $15 for the set.

So much great advice guys, and i thank you all. I went to the parts store today and they did not have an inline fuse setup that would accept 45 amps, so i went with a 30 ampfuse for the middle link. I then replaced the other two with new inline fuse wires and put 20 amps in those. And to my surpise, the car started right up! And even better it didnt blow the 30 amp one in the middle! I think i will swa in a second gen fuse box soon, but for now it works. I guess it must have been the 22 year old fuseable links that were causing all of the problems! Again thanks guys for all the help, now all i have to do is put the dash and insturment cluster back together. Haha the rx7 is back on the road woot woot!
