Small project turns into medium/medium-high project thread

So, this all started out with me wanting to clean up my motor and the best way to do so in my eyes is to pull it out and really give it a good scrub-down. Next, I thought "hey while I'm here and all this stuff is easier to get to I might as well change my water temp sensor and oil press sensors". Did that and then thought that I should powdercoat some items that I have always wanted to do and a few more that I didnt think of thanks to Kgray/trochoid.

First step, take off oil pan and front cover. Next step was to find all the gaskets needed to put everything back together, including water pump gaskets, etc.

Guess what? If I buy all the gaskets I need seperately then it will cost pretty close to the same price as just buying a complete "full motor" gasket set. So now I am thinking, "hey so now I will have all these gaskets that I wont actually need and it will be a PITA to resell them since some would be missing." This is when I have the idea to go ahead and refresh my motor.

I previously had nitrous on my car and I couldnt figure it out (have since then figured out what my problems were but thats a longer story than this is already) so I took off the nitrous and then noticed a weird sound from my exhaust. I checked the compression and low and behold I was putting out ~90 on one face of the rear rotor when the other 5 were all closer to ~110. I knew that this was probably either a chipped side seal or maybe something simpler like a smashed down side seal spring.

Luckily for me, Atkins sells a rebuild kit that is all the springs, soft seals, and gaskets that I will need to fix my compression problem. Therefore, that is what I plan on doing - a good refresh that will hopefully fix all my previous mistakes with the nitrous and also fix a few other minor problems while I am in there and its all tore down.

One of my problems isnt actually a problem. Its one of those "the guy told me it is streetported but I dont ACTUALLY know if it is or not, and if it is how much". I also dont know if the exhaust was ported. I plan on going ahead and buying the RB race exhaust template and hopefully being able to free up a bit more power. I also plan on possibly stretching out the existing streetport (if it is actually ported) to maybe get a bit more there too.

......All this during the nicest months to drive the 7... (sigh)

Oh well, at least being the nicest time to drive the car also means it the nicest time to FIX the car.

Update, though no one cares.

Found out that my low compression on one side was maybe a cracked apex seal which decided to break all the way when I tore the motor down. Also lots of flaking on rear housing. I have a spare that I will use if I decide to not go ahead and make it a 4 port 13B. Also figured out that my motor was not ported so that will need done no matter what. Not sure if I want to go with the pineapple templates, RB, or just go crazy and buy a set of Judge Ito templates. Any ideas or recommendations would be nice.

i care + 1 more. when i take the car off the road this winter i was to pull my motor and clean up the bay, i have a lot of wires that aren't hooked up yet my car runs great. the car is about to hit 300,000 miles. the kid i got the car from said the motor was rebuilt 40,000 miles ago.

iam trying to chose do i rebuild the motor and try to port it or just buy one.
i plan on super chargering it down the road.

its fun how you change you oil on a friday night and the next thing you know the next day your motor is apart.

yes I am way to familiar with that story I have had my SA for about 1 year now and maybe have put 200 miles on it once I bought it I went ahead and swaped all the bushing new springs shocks well while we are at it might as well go over the brakes then motor swap and then whole wiring (and I mean every little peace of it) well now I just got a front air dam for the car so I was like might as well paint the whole thing. So trust me I know exactly how you feel.

Good Luck Ian! Go Judge Ito!!

Warwickben - leave it alone. SP is only 10-15% more power over stock. You could do more with bolt-ons.

I wonder if Ito has a BP template as well.

That is how the story goes for most 7 owners, IanS. It should be in the contract when you sign over the title, I hope you read the fine print

so you guys dont think its worth it for me to sp my motor , if i remove my rats nest and go rb header to tail pipe set-up with a side draft?

when i got the car it didnt have a glove box arm rest or ash tray, well it did but it was cheap wood the kid installed in place of it. i got all that stuff from a member and when i installed i noticed my rug was wet i pull it up and saw some one patched a small hole with cardboard and tape, the next thing i know my seats are out and i fixed 2 more crappy duct tape patches . at least my car is fixed right now.

my car will never be a show car i wount ever have enough money to do that but i want it to be a sleeper flat black and fast. no 9 second car.

Nube here...Judge Ito? I just bought 2 85 7's a white GSL-SE and a black 12A (all for, get this $800) The white one runs, the black's 12A starts (haven't actually tried to get it going, but there's not title on her). I'd like to complete restore the GSL-SE turn her into a silver lady with black racing stripes, repaint the interior plastic black and do black and silver inside...I'd like to get some serious legal power out of the 13A, is Judge Ito the way?
