Small problem?

Hello all,
This is my first post so I might not know all of the lingo etc.

Anyway I had an '81 S but it got totalled when a Jimmy ran into me. I always liked driving it and when I recently came across an '85 GS, I jumped at the opportunity. It's a little rough, but the body's straight, the engine's solid, and the ride is oh so smooth.

There are a few little things that I can fix such as body work and tailpipe replacement.

However there is one thing I had a question on:

Shifting into fourth gear results in a slight grinding noise, both shifting up from third and down from fifth. If I double-clutch, it doesn't happen, so that's what I'm doing currently.

I was wondering if anyone knows what this could be....is it just an old fourth gear or what?

Thank you.

Welcome to the forum. I'll be passing thru Klamath at the end of the month on my way home to the bend area.

What you have is a bad synchro in the trans. You can probably drive it for quite awhile like that without any problems. Eventually you will want to replace the trans.

Alright thanks!

Yeah, I've gotten really good at bowling seeing as how there are four alleys in the little town....

Any idea how much that tranny's going to cost?

You can usually find a good used one for around $100.00 plus shipping. I think Redding is the closest picknpull to you.
