Slimming connectors I don't need (wire harness question)

I've recently pulled the rats nest, A/C, and cruise control out of my 85. I'm wondering if there is a way for me to drop the connectors and excessive wires I no longer need to try and clean the harness up a little without having to pull it and re-do the harness like I've seen on a few cars. I'd like to hack most of the excess wiring back to the main part of the harness, but I wasn't sure it's ok to cut and tape, or if there is a safer route to go about it. Not trying to go too half assed on the job, just not trying to rewire the entire car either.

Thanks for the input.

I just did that on mine last weekend. I used a keychain utility knife (set the blade shallow) on the tape and replaced the tape with corrugated plastic wire loom. It's a tad difficult to get the pins out of the black rectangular harness connector under the master cylinders. If you look into the engine side connector on the side it mates with the other, you will see the pins have locking tabs on 2 sides. I took the smallest tubular section of an old telescoping antenna and slipped on the pin to compress the little locking tabs, then the pins pull right out with a tug on the wire. If I had a good pic i would post it, I'm really happy with it. The only wires on my engine are alt, sensors, and dizzy. Very clean harness. Good Luck!

BTW - I did all of this in the engine bay, it took about an 1.5 hours at a leisurely pace.

Thanks for the input. I'll see if I can pull something like this off. I'm waiting on parts, so I've got time to do some of the other things that I may have usually ignored if I was in more of a rush.

These work great for stripping off tape and wire loom without having to worry about cutting wires:
