Signs of an overheated motor?

Hey everyone.

In the process (hopefully) of rebuilding my engine. I know everyone says "oh if it was overheated its basically toast". But how can you tell if they have been overheated?

Searched and nothing really came up except it is very important if it has been overheated. That i can understand but how do you tell?

well...

there are different ways to overheat an engine

- oil starvation will make the engine overheat and your e-shaft will get all kinds of colours. Even low oil will produce the same results

- if the engine runned without water, the orings might be ok, but the irons or housings might warp.

- if compression passed the orings ... well, you will find a screw up oring with pieces missing from it.

- use a straight edge to measure the irons and measure the housings with a micrometer in diferent spots.

Hmm. is there a way to tell of the irons are warped. Would a straight edge test work or are we talking tiny measurments of warpage?

The e-shaft looks pretty good. That being said ive never seen a new one or a good used one. Im assuming all kinds of colors means it looks like metal that has been burnt and thus discolored?

Thanks for the info, was very helpful xl8rplanet

I´ve seen overheated e-shafts, it turns violet, blue, gold, black. All kinds of colour plus scratches all over the place (the bearings usually seize)

Place a feeler gauge under a straight edge on the iron, pull the feeler gauge and the straight edge should move with it. Do it in several places.

I cant remember top of my head what size of feeler gauge. Mail me and I will look at it at home
