Try to find an adhesive remover. Should find it in a bodyshop supply store.

Since our paint is old would the adhesive remover harm it any?

From experience, the 3 MM double sticky foam tape, available at auto stores or for about half as much money at Home Depot, works perfectly. You stick it on the back of the moulding strip, trim it with a razor blade, peal the paper off the other sticky surface and stick it on (be sure the paint surface is clean). It bonds instantly and very tightly, just be sure to get it aligned right the first time. Also, I've found the vaseline treatment to get the black back on the mouldings works great, it's inexpensive, fast, easy and lasts a long time (about three summer months so far), much better than armor all and things like that.

A friend of mine who owns a body shop used a buffing wheel at high speed. My twenty year old paint remained flawless.
