I'm trying to do a little "comparo" (to steal a word fro mthe Car and Driver dictionary) to see what setups are the most rounded, well-balanced for daily driver/autoX-drift/drag/road race....






I am going to be using this 83 for everything I can. It has to pull multi-duty until I can afford another car...



I am well aware of the importance of different components... but I wanna see what YOU are running as far as engine/suspension/safety/wheels/tires.

Also, if you can give me a rough estimate as to what components you treasure the most on the car, and how much they ran you.

I'm just looking to take more of a different direction for this car than the previous SIX... don't quite know what that direction is yet, but hopefully y'all can help me out! Where do I go from here?

i have an 84 gsl with a holley 600 carburetor and racing beat intake...soon to have racing beat headers to a 2.5" straight pipe to a big fart can...all emmisions and useless things (such as a/c) have been removed...and i plan to put a 12a half-bridge in this summer.

The car in my sig has won three CSP championships in Solo2 SCCA auto-xing, and, on top of that, was a daily driver for 13 years. The motor/clutch in the car has roughly 120,000miles on it. The clutch needs to be replaced, as it slips quite badly when under a heavy load in 4th and 5th gear.

The car has never been down a drag strip, but with a poorly tuned carb and slipping clutch it pulled 6.90s 0-60.

Sure, it isn't the fastest or best handling, but for a daily driver that can be a competitive autocrosser, it is a great set-up.

P.S. When my motor was built 10 years ago, Nick at Rotary Reliability and Racing said that my car, in its current set-up makes roughly 215 flywheel horsepower; if that helps with referrence.

 

i have a 1985 (s3 rx7) i mainly use it as a cruiser , iv done the following mods to it.
s4 13bt engine , master power/to4/61 turbo , garrett 42mm waste gate , 4inch air intake , big front mount cooler , 3inch cooler piping from cooler to throttle body,2.5 inch from turbo to cooler. malpassi rising reg , 1680cc injectors [ in secondarys] 550cc as primerys , haltech E6K ecu, battery relocated to the hatch area , moded JATCO 3 spd auto [ with 3000 rpm convertor] tail shaft loop , locked s3 diff with 3.7 ratio.

 

Autocross, daily driver, road race, drift, drag race.

Do some research on the proper set up for each, and I would bet you will find there is not compromise setup that adequately addresses all. The performance characteristics needed for each form of driving are different. I would think taking a drift car on a road race track would be a scary proposition!

You may be able to come up with a decent compromise setup that involves changing rear springs / shocks, or disabling the front sway bar, but I would be very surprised that one setup would work for for all.

But, I have been wrong before, and open to listening.

Is there anybody out there that has done all with the same car / same hardware setup?

 

I ran SCCA CSP in autocross w/ my 81 street ported 7: Holley w/ RB intake, header, presilencer, Power Pulse muffler. RB springs, sways & Tokiko HP shocks. Yokohama 509 tires mostly. Tried other tires but came back to Yokos. I did quite well.

 

Pretty mild/moderate street suspension setup.Tokiko blues,175 RB springs all around,RB front sway bar.CP rack and pinion steering,poly bushings,strut bars.


More than made up for by big 225 and 245 17" Falken FK451 tires and lightweight Advan wheels.Also SE brakes in the back and 12" Selectmaz front rotors.Full TII brake system, and then some.Stainless lines,EBC pads,tires rated "AA" traction,LSD....rain or shine it grips and stops.


Power is about 300.S5 streetport TII,TO4B,3" exhaust,Spearco IC,TII tranny,light flywheel,massive cooling mods.Power is kept at a sane level for drivetrain longevity and such a lithe car is just simply dangerous with much more power.My 84 is more of a "do anything" car.Not a drag racer,but it pulls 12's- low13's if prodded.Not a roadracer,but it handles and stops well enough to get the blood flowing.Not a commuter,but it still gets 20mpg on the highway and passes CA smog no problem.

As far as power goes... I've driven stock (105hp) to BUILT (390rwhp), and honestly, the 240-260 mark is right about where I want to be. Any more than that, and I'll probably kill myself.

 

Unfortunately, I am a very cheap bastard when it come to my RX-7. With the family I have to keep my priorities on them. My car recieves alot of attention though, most of which is hand made by me in one shape or another. I'm guessing I have about 160~170 @ the wheels without the set up being tuned by other than seat of the pants and air fuel monitor. Have heard that my setup should be capable of 200~225 if tuned. For now I have other plans. There is a 1985 12a short block in the shed that I planning on rebuilding and porting.

I also have a bunch of stuff to install yet. It's just to darn cold outside.

Thats great you got away with a street port in CSP

 

83 street ported 12a with a Holley 600, this is a low cost daily driver. Should be around 200hp. I got $600 in the engine and probably $1000 in bolt ons, carb, msd, RB intake, header, muffler, sway bars. Bought the car for $900. I dont think you can find anything cheaper that will handle as good or be as fast.

Had your said working 'on', I would have posted one of the 7's.

Since you said working 'with', that would imply tools, and or equipment. So I'll stretch 'with' a little and include the shop I built 2 years ago to work on the 7's.

And yes, that is aluminum treadplate on the floor, got tired of trying to clean the damn tile. Also note the 4'x12' pit in the middle. The shop has a wood floor and a basement. The large cabinet on the right is the sand blast cabinet I built.

its nice to have a garage for sure, although my "garage" (aka barn) is mostly dirt, its warm, which is nice for winter, but it still sucks being dirty as **** after a simple oil change.....

i really shouldn't be complaining, cause its a nice place to work
