Question shouldnt i be faster !!... or not?

alright i went out tonight and decide to do some test runs on my car .
there is a spot that takes me about close to a hour to get to but its in the middle of no where and it has one sign on each side of the and exactly 1/4 mile away is a black pray painted line on the side.......

aiight what the hell!! are automatics in 1st gens that bad? or is it just mine ...?!?

with no manually shifting ( juts set it on (D) drive and and hit the gas

0-60 12 seconds 1/4 got to 18 quit counting haha

then i decided to try manually shifting the gears ( holding first gear to about 6000rpm an then shifting to second) and so on

0-60 9.5/9.9 seconds ( give or take) 1/4 was porlly in the high 17s

now my car has a 13b 4-port, mild street port, with a stock carb ( prolly needs a rebuild), rb header, and slightly modified exhaust ( for other useless info check signature) plus about 200,000+ miles on the car and 100,000 on the 13b

shouldnt it be faster than this!?!?

is the automatic transmission holdin it back alot ?
or is somthing wrong with my car/engine?

anybody care to take a stab at this...please help

and does any body have a set up similar to mine wiht a 5 speed? and what you run?

Have you dynoed your car? Im not familair with the automatics but those numbers are similar to a stock '79 SA.
IMO that stock carb is the engines bottleneck, especially if the engine has been ported.

First and foremost get rid of that damn slush-box.

After that you might want to look at upgrading the rest of your exhaust and installing a better carb. You can either have the Nikki modified or get a Weber, Dellorto etc.

With all these things sorted out you should be well into the 15's at least.

When I am at the auto-x I run my baby to 8grand before shifting. (I know its not good for the origional motor) I have picked up alot of time, 1, because I dont have to shift as much, 2, because when I do shift its right in the middle of the motors sweetspot.

A buddy of mine is trying to blow is old motor up, by holding it till 10,000.
Thats when I wish it had pistons. So that one would fly through the top of the hood and hit him in the head.

haha aiight cool i didnt tell the truth about my shifting because i worried of gettin bashed for hutrting my baby again....

anyways i hold mine till the extremely usefull rpm buzzer goes off ( does help a **** load more haha

and im asumeing the " slush box " is the auto tranny or?

plus im already in the middle of decideding how much i want to go into debt wiht my recently upgraded balance on my credit card hehe

i was thinkin supercharger ( to be different) or your basic verticle 48weber

and yes ive thought about coverting to 5 speed ..but i have this crazy dream someday soon i will find a clean silver or black 84/85 gsl (se maybe) wiht a nice gray interior and already a 5speed that i can transfer my engine into ... thanks for the offer on the parts..but my dad has a old rotary hookup who say we can have all the parts for the swap for free... all we have to do is go pull them off the 15+ dead 7's he has

AUTOMATICS SUCK ****!!!!! It takes off slow, and builds up speed slower!!! The only way you can go "fast" is by manually shifting each gear and using overdrive as the 4th gear!!! 5500 rpm is usually a good shift point...it looks ricer, but you wont get beat by Corsicas.

You dont need a turbo or anything to go mad fast, yo. Try getting rid of your rats nest, you need: header, exhaust, porting! Now, porting, you could go bridgy (no power until 8000rpm Constant fear of stalling) street port is the best way to go. Dual MSDs, Carb upgrade, and if your hardcore, lightening the car (no subs )

Hey man...Let me know if its possible to get a CHEAP 12A for me to take apart and maybe rebuild...Im looking for one I can get fairly cheap. Just the block is fine, no accessories are needed. Its just that I tore into the one that I was gonna rebuild, and it has a bad rotor, and two bad housings.

no ****, time is money. er, do you load the torque converter when you launch? that should help you some. otherwise get rid of the slushbox. not only do you have less control but its robbing power too.

Here's most of your problem:

5 speed ratios / auto ratios

1st 3.622 / 2.458
2nd 2.186 / 1.458
3rd 1.419 / 1.00
4th 1.000 /

with an automatic you are pratically starting out in 2nd gear
