Just gota relax most everyone here is pretty chill, and if someone is an ******* you can just let it slide, but there are a lot of different people and age ranges so communication is always a bit hard.

Like I said when I took a peek at the car, premix is overkill, definitely don't use chainsaw oil, just regular oil (10w-30 I think, but someone may correct me here. I don't premix yet, but now that I don't have my omp in...) That oil is why you had that lavender smoke coming so consistently out of your tail pipe unless I miss my guess. Hell, if I was in your position I don't know if I would even check the omp, I sure didn't when I got mine. If you are looking for peace of mind, check your omp. Or when you get her street legal come over to my place we can take a look at it and see if it runs right.

One easy way to learn this stuff is to do what Siraniko suggests and download the FSM. Take one system at a time and really study it. For example, the oil metering pump system. The FSM will include a flow chart of systems and how to troubleshoot it. It will also give illustrations on what the parts look like and where they are located. Take the FSM and find that part on your car and then read the FSM to understands its operation. After doing this if you run into a road block, ask a question here. If you do the leg work with the FSM to understand the system in question, the guys on here will pickup on that and know that you are trying your best. Many times guys new to RX-7 will just ask question after question without doing any research first and we can tell. I for one really respect someone that digs in and tries to learn on their own first rather then someone that seems lazy and does not want to put in the effort.

Keep at it - it really is easy to learn.

+1

I learned by taking everything apart with the aid of the Haynes manual. IMO the diagrams in the FSM are useful but there's no substitute for seeing how it all actually goes together in real life. I was actually kind of rooting for the engine swap scenario (there's no better way to get to know a car mechanically than to pull the engine), but in the end I'm glad things turned out the way they did. Now Cody just needs to stop obsessing over premix and learn to drive his car.

Just look down the carb at idle and see if oil dribbles down out of the OMP inlets. If yes, stop premixing. On a street car premix seems to lower your compression a bit. Ive done it both ways. Funcional OMP is easier to start.

There is a procedure in the FSM on how to test the OMP. I believe it has you take the idle (RMPs) up to a certain level for so long and you can measure the amount of oil. It's not that much oil, but the OMP is actuated by the RPMs. The important part is that the tubes have oil in them and you can see it move toward the carb. If you're really worried, add some cheap Walmart TC3 two cycle oil to the gas.

Yeah, the one on your dash works pretty well. The trick is looking at that and the oil at the same time.

Yeah, or get both of the OMP lines going into some sort of graduated device and secured so they can't fall out somehow with the shaking engine. It's better with 2 people. You are premixed anyhow, so running without the lines will be no big deal.

Cody. Don't lose sleep over this. The MOP very very rarely fails and usually only with engines that have been neglected. You have a low-mileage car that's been taken care of. I wouldn't worry about it, at least not until you know your way around the engine bay a little better.

Why not focus on easier ways to get to know your car? Have you done an oil change yet (first thing I do when I get a new car---it's like a mechanical handshake)? A wash and wax? Vacuumed and cleaned the interior? Bled the brakes? Flushed the coolant?

Enjoy your car before you start to hate it.

rx7club is definitely one of the most helpful in the car forum community, especially the FB crowd. consider yourself lucky you didn't get into hondas, nissans, etc., then you'd really get your feelings hurt.

as for the OMP, u can pull up on the OMP lever while the motor is idling to increase the amount of oil to be squirted to see if oil is at least coming out (i can do that with my GSL-SE so i'm assuming the 12a has similar mechanical OMP).

What I always do Cody is keep the OMP hooked up and check its output according to the FSM.

Then add 8 oz. of walmart 2 cycle oil to the tank each time I fill up (15 gallons).

Pros:

1) An insurance policy against OMP failure.]
2) We all know 12A's love oil. The more oil, the better.

Cons:

1) You get that dirty poopy yellow haze over your tail pipe. (Isopropyl alcohol wipes it off quick, hit it every couple of weeks.

2) Your spark plugs will need more regular cleaning. You have cleaned up your spark plugs already, right Mr. Cody?

3) People look at you strange at the gas station. Worst one I ever had was a bible thumper who also liked to add oil to his gas, for a totally different reason. I was there for 45 minutes trying to calm the guy down.

Word of Wisdom: Post more pics, fewer questions.

Now go out and change your oil.

You got some pics of that unit you're working on? Post 'em up, a picture is worth a thousand words. (a video worth a million).

Thanks
Ray
