Should I do it?

I have a chance to get an 81 RX7 for $300. I was told it ran, but needs a battery. It's been a California car all of it's life. The only rust is a small spot on the underside of the hood. Paint and interior are pretty much shot. Plan on using it as a track car though, so interior doesn't really matter to me. I'm an FD driver, but the Mazdatrix 1st Gen that they ran at Mazfest this year really got me wanting one.

Just looking for opinions from the 1st Gen section. Should I buy it? Thanks.

if the body and mechanicals are good, then that's all you need for a track car.

there really isn't much reason to get one year over another, in a 1st gen. although the 82 has the air/air oil cooler which saves some time.

Buy it. If you don'tlike it - part it out for twice that amount! But once you get it running, you wouldn't want to give it up.

Do you plan on having it as a second car, or a track machine?

i would jump on it in a heartbeat. a CA car will have virtually little to no rust. here in OH, we battle rotting wheel wells and control arms that have literally rotted away from the body, so year $300 for a CA car is an excellent deal!
