Short shifter custom made. What style **** should I get?
Okay, while my car is in the shop getting repaired, I asked for a custom made short shifter that one of the techs made for his car. So, while that's being done, I'm having a hard time trying to decide on what style (universal) shifter **** I should get. I'm deciding between a ball style or the traditional style, short, and leather wrapped. And, if anyone has any links or suggestions of where to go (Jegs, Summit, or a walk-in auto parts store), include that, too.
Because of the shorter distance, I'm wondering if ball is better than traditional because you'd really have to have your hand down low to wrap around it like the stock unit.
Any opinions or input would be greatly appreciated.

ok so you are having a shifter shortened? so it looks shorter or are you having a real short shifter made to shorten the throw? you could get a stock miata shifter (mx3 i beleave) and it will shorten your throw and give you a shorter looking shifter also....... now for the shift **** thats all on you get something with a good feel to it. and like kim said get 1 with some weight to it helps with shifting makes for a smoother shift

The tech is taking an existing shifter rod and heating it up. He had it in his 2nd Gen and I liked the feel of it; very short throws. But, a stock Mazda Miata MX-3 shifter will fit and basically it is a short throw?

if your going to all this trouble for a short shifter why dont you thread it??.. go to a tool and die shop or something to get it done.. you wont get quality with that universal mounting stuff, its cheap and one day youll rip it right off.

I see what you're getting at. I'll try to find a shop that will be able to do that once I figure out a threat pitch.

Dumb question, but this is really my first time dealing with an actual short shifter kit, so what I'm curious about is, is the handle shorter than stock as well or is it the same length? I ask because on order is a Redline Accessories shifter boot and I just e-mailed them telling them that I have a short shifter going in.

I ALWAY GET RID OF THE BALL SHIFTER. I NEVER LIKED THEM I ALWAY SWAP THEM FOR THE B&M UNIVERSAL T-HANDLE ALUMINUM SHIFTER. I CAN GRIP IT BETTER FOR A GREATER EVEN MORE FORCED SHIFT.
