Angry Shifter **** removal woes

Yes i searched. and searched, and searched. All the threads say the same thing. the shifter **** should just unscrew. mine doesn't. there was mention of some sort of lock nut. mine has none. its the stock ****, i assuming the stock shaft. i tried vice grip, channel lock combinations, to no avail. its stuck. im about to hack it apart and buy a new one. all i wanted to do was try a new shifter boot. this is apparently too much to ask of my car.

edit, just a little frustrated. didnt mean to sound rude. Can anybody please help me? or send me a new shift **** so i can destroy this one? lol

Sounds like someone may have superglued that **** on. I did it to mine (a bit too much super glue). You pretty much would need to get a whole new unit. And, to do that, you won't need to hack it apart. Remove the boot, you'll see some bolts securing the assembly. It's really easy to do. Just make sure you keep track of where all the bolts/pins/cups, etc go!

just had a thought. do you think i could carefully heat top of the shaft enough to compromise the glue, without damaging the internals below? i dont really know how the parts below the inner boots work (besides theory) because i haven't taken one apart yet.

so the heat thing didnt work. im wondering if some kind of solvent would dissovle the glue enough to break the **** free.

will the shaft assembly be different because i have a short throw, or is that all done with parts below the shaft?
i dont really want to buy a whole new one just because of this stupid ****. i would think it would be easier/cheaper
to hack the **** off and just get a new ****. if anyone has any other ideas, im sitting here with dremel in hand
waiting to cut the rubber part off the ****.

Mazdatrix.com has a step-by-step tutorial on how to remove it. It's part of their short shifter install.

You can get a shaft assembly for about $20 if you post a WTB thread in the For Sale/WTB section of the forum.

I see you mention the "lock nut" in your 1st post and say yours has none. Just want to double check, did you remove the interior shift boot?

If I remember correctly the lock nut is under the rubber shift boot part and it will take 2 wrenches to remove the ****. One to twist the rob, the other to twist the locknut.

If this doesn't help, here is the procedure to remove the shifter so you can at least get it out of the car and have an easier time working on it.

How do you get it up into the threads where the shifter **** is screwed onto? I'd sure like to know so that I can remove my shifter ****.

Well a far as i can tell i dont have a lock nut, but i'm not opposed to looking again, anybody have a picture? or can someone point it out in on of the pictures in SunRed's mazdatrix link?

edit i alreadly have the shifter assembly out of the car thanks tho

well im working on it with the acetone, idk tho, it doesn't seem to want to come off yet. Anybody have a black **** they want to sell me? stock or otherwise

Check out the For Sale section and post a WTB. Be better off there. Or, just check out a few universal ones online. Usually, you get better looking ones online at the right sites (Jeg's, Summit, PerformanceCenter) than, say, Pep Boys.

I do not know if this is good for it or not, but if you have enough acetone, just put it in a glass and put the stick in there **** side down. Cover it the best you can if you want so it will not evaporate, and leave it overnight.


Again, I do not know if this is good for the ****, but it will get acetone in it long enough.

If you've got the shifter out of the car then most likely you would have found the locknut. Heres a pic though for reference of what should have been there.
