She's Alive!!! but still needs help....

Well, after more than 2 years, my 84 12A came back to life today! It was a glorious occasion for me and I loved it! However, she isn't idling at all and the power is really low.

Background:
Stock motor
Timing is almost right (still working it)
RB Holley setup (bought off this site from someone also running stock motor)
RB Full Exhaust
Brand new fuel in tank
New fuel filter
Checked for Vac leaks and didn't find any.

She fires right up now and starts. I took her for a spin around the neighborhood and she is pretty rough, backfires occasionally, and doesn't feel like she has a whole lot of power. I still have to work on the timing a little, but the only way to keep the engine running is to blip the throttle every second or two. She dies if the throttle isn't pushed and when it gets below 2K. I was able to take the car down to the nearby gas station to get a full tank of gas, but's about all I'll take it. I didn't take the engine past 4K and she still felt pretty weak. Also, I realized the the RB presilencer was really hot. Hotter than the rest of the exhaust.

What can I do to get the idle running correctly?

I'm going to work on the idle, but it seems too off to even try. The new spark plugs were ordered and they'll be gotten tomorrow so I'll try with them, but that doesn't seem to be it to me. Any more suggestions? Your help is greatly appreciated.

Oh yeah, I'll have to put pictures of the 7 in my sig now. Can't wait!

So how did you end up getting it started? When you say your exhaust is getting to hot is the header glowing? Are you and the person you purchased the carb from at the same elevation? Backfiring could be from weak compression, Timing off or a vaccum leak. Seeing as how it sat for 2 years and you say that there isn't any vaccum leaks i would lean towards weak compression. Carbon and oil might have gunked up your seals causing them to stick somewhat. Also since you didn't drive it very far you really didn't give the engine time to lubricate itself real well.

Was this car running well before it was parked?

Well, I found the the main pulley up front was misaligned by 90 degrees so my timing was WAY off. I did the check with the flywheel position (thanks to the search function) and she fired right up after that. The car had sat for 2+ years and right before that, I had put a used engine in it that I had bought. I was never able to get it running at that time (now I know why) and it ended up sitting unfortunately. Exhaust isn't glowing, just getting hot. I was cleaning the gunk off the bottom of the car with a hose and the water (what little got on it) was vaporizing off the silencer, but not the header. Just overspray, I'm not hosing them by any means. The carb was from VA I believe. I wonder if it's running really rich??? Will just prolonged running get the apex seals loosened up? Anything I can do? When I tun the engine over with no spark plugs, I hear 3 distinct hard whooshes from each rotor.

Well, I'll try again this evening with some more suggestions.... keep them coming please, I can't tell you how happy I am to have her running again!
