Several Small Problems

For your information my car is a 1985 Rx-7 with the 12a engine

Ok, the seller of the car didnt tell me this when I bought it, but after driving it around the first night I noticed something funny about my gas guage... if I lay into the throttle a bit the gas guage dips way down, but if I go around corners and brake hard it goes way up, now I know this is fuel sloshing around causing this to happen, but my question is this...

Where is the fuel level monitor/guage located? on the fuel pump? I need to know what to replace to get it fixed.

Also.... I was driving down the highway when randomly I heard a clunking noise then the sound of something being dragged on the ground, I was right near my exit so I pulled off got into a parking lot and looked under the car, there was a pipe that looked just like a sway bar hanging down, so I pulled on it, it came off fairly easy, and now its sitting in my garage. I looked at it and its a hollow pipe with some rubber tubing on the end of it, part of my emissions somehow I believe, because when the car sits still for a bit I can smell exhaust gases coming from under the car. It hasnt effected the performance of the car at all but I would like to get it fixed, possible welded back into place, anyone have any idea what it is?

Lastly... My arm rest console hinge is broken =( the little plastic piece just busted right at the seam, anyone have any similar experience with this console cover? What I can use as a temporary fix until I can either order a new one or rifle through a junkyard for one?

Thank you in advance

Brian

1. The fuel sending unit is located in the rear of the car on the gas tank. You'll have to remove the drivers side rear wheel, then a plasic cover. It has a connector on it, is round with 6 or 8 (probably seriously corroded) screws.

2. The pipe could be the one that goes from the air pump to the cat. It is for emissions, look to see if there's a small pipe on the cat converter, one end of the pipe goes there. BTW, the cat will self-destruct without that air going into it.

3. Do a 'search' on the console hinge. Someone on here a while back had a fix for it using a piano hinge.

Good Luck!

Yeah, a small piano hinge from your local hardware store with short screws will fix both the center console, as well as the storage bins (a larger hinge for these obviously) if the hinges on those are broken.

The pipe I would guess is in fact the pipe that goes from the ACV outlet to the catalytic converter. It injects air into the cats to make them work. You do need it otherwise there will be an exhaust leak where it hooks up (two bolts and nuts) on the cat, which would let out the fumes youre smelling, not to mention as well as to pass emissions testing and save the lifespan of the cats. As I said earlier, it uses two bolts and nuts on a small flange on one end to attach to the cat, and a piece of rubber hose on the other to attach to the outlet from the ACV. I hope that helps.

can I just ditch the cats? I live in michigan and there is no testing required for the cars here so I wouldnt really need to run em...

by the way, what exhaust were you running on your car before it got stolen? Some racing beat deal?

Yeah, you can ditch them if you dont need them, and yeah I was running the full single pipe (stock port) setup from RB with no cats.

its like 500 something bucks for the whole system for my car =\

cant just get some hardware store piping bent to fit my car? or do 7's run too hot for that crap?

-edit- and what intake was it that you had for your car? it looked totally sweet, how much was it? did it make a big difference in performance?

You could always just get the cat replacement pipe from RB (in their exhaust components section). Its just a pipe that bolts to the stock manifold, and then the connecting pipe to get rid of the cats. The car might be pretty loud after that, but at least you would have no cats, and a little more power .

I had a Weber 45 DCOE intake and wrap around manifod port matched to the block. I got it from Robert at www.rotaryshack.com, and yeah, it made the car have quite a bit more "oomph" .

EDIT: For more info about my mods I had, you can click my signature and it will take you to a website all about my car.

I can testify to the effectiveness of the RB cat-replacement pipe... installed one on my '82 and it was probably the best $90 I ever spent on the car... it ran cooler, ran stronger and got better gas milage when I wasn't beating on the car...
