Set ignition Right on car runs terrible...

I am trying to help my friend tune his car. I turned the pulley to line up with the yellow mark (closest to the drivers side wall) turned the distributor so that the little dimple lined up with the line on the distributor body. Dialed it in and WHAM a civic could have murdered me....WTF?

The car has a 13B with s4 intake and the rats nest removed... What could be wrong? When I advance it about 20 degrees it runs better but the motor shakes and misses... Any help would be great.

Thanks

I know the 12A you have the arrow pointing towards the firewall when set to factory. Arrow on the dizzy rotor, that is.

I never use the dimple or F mark. Maybe I learned how to mess with Mazda distributors a different way than everybody else. Basically, the flat side of the shaft needs to face forward or rearward when you stab a dizzy into an engine. One of the teeth on the reluctor is close to the leading pickup's core. When you install the rotor, one of the leading tips will point forward and the other rearward. It doesn't matter which direction the little arrow is pointing. Don't believe me? Rotate the engine a full 360° and see where the little arrow ends up. In other words, 180° out is fine.

If the dizzy is installed 90° out, that could cause a problem.

Hey,

My timing was advanced a **** load when I checked it, so we timmed it right and I'm having the same problem.

My 0-60 went from 8.2 seconds to 12.3 seconds.

Did you fix this? Does anyone have suggestions?

When I advance the timing the sucker smokes like a chimney in the morning.
