Seris 2 5 speed Gearbox

Ok, tonight while driving home, in 5th gear, something strange happened, i added power to pass someone, then Bang, lots a griding and the stick poped into neutral.

in with the clutch, still rolling at 120 Kph, No 5th, ****, try 4th, no 4th either, ok, roll a bit slower, thats it, into 3rd. hmmmmmm after cruising in 3rd, i approached a set of traffic lights, No going Into 2nd either! GRrrrrrrrrrr by now i was thinking, this is going to be a long night. once i stopped, and started again, i had all 5 gears back, hmmmm, the problem soon became aparent, 2nd gear! cant get it going down the gears, but from 1st 2 2nd is real crunchy! but all other gears are fine.

Sooooooooo has anyone ever changed the Syncros in a 1st gen, series 2, 5 speed RX-7 before????
or is it cheaper just to buy a new cog box?

You need special tools to dissassemble the gearbox. I made the tools I needed to do mine.

Care to elaborate Carl? Not everyone has your penchant and talent for fabricating everything.

Get a new one from a boneyard. Use an 81-82 one, or your driveshaft will have to be swapped as well.

I agree with ya DF. Junkyard tranny swap is easier. If all you have to do is change the syncros, its pretty easy, you just have to do a good job lapping them into the gear cones. The biggest pain is taking it apart and putting it back together. Its like a carb, lotta small parts. You need to keep track of all the springs, *****, shift forks etc....... As far as special tools you'll need one of these, and a 2 or 3 jaw puller just as long to get the gear off after you remove the nut.
