Separating an SA bellhousing
Guys,
I'm looking to clean and powdercoat the bellhousing to my tranny, and thought it was just bolted on like all the old ribcase trannys I'd seen. It looks like the tailshaft has thru-holes, as does the gearcase, and that the long screws are threaded into the bellhousing. There's also a cover inside for the seals and whatnot for the gearcase.
In order to get my bellhousing off, do I have to stand the tranny on the tailshaft, take out those 8 bolts or so around the tailshaft, take out the 6 bolts inside the bellhousing, and pound the gearcase down and off the bellhousing? If so, it doesn't seem like a lot of work, but the last thing I want is a tranny-grenade of snap rings and detents flying all over the place.

As I remember there is a snap ring bearing retainer under the cover in the bellhousing. Remove the cover with the clutch fork pivot, take the snap ring off. Undo the 6 or so long bolts that hold the transmission cases together and get a piece of round wood to drive out the bearings in the bellhousing. All of the little stuff will stay together, no problem.
