Selling My Gen. 2 To Buy Gen.1!! What Should I Look 4??
Hey wsup folks?! Well I've decided to sell my 87 sports, and get into a gen.1. A friend of mine told me that he knows of a 13b gen.1 w/under 100k on it and for less than $1k. Hes not sure of exact miles or if theres any body damage, but does this sound like a good deal?? Was the 13b any good in the gen.1's?? I really dont want to make a bad decision here,so any and all info will be appreciated!! If u have any suggestions as to a particular year and model, please lemme know. I want to get the best gen.1 I can!!

Well living in NY you are not going to get the best first gen for under $1000. As far as a project goes that car sounds like a good deal. But don't go selling your 2nd gen to get it.

I'm disappointed in my follwe 1st gen people here... you posted and got little reponse. Anyway..
Yes, you can get a 13b in the first gens. They only came in 84-85 on the GSL-SE, rated at 135hp. Now usually the decent ones go for 2+ and the really clean ones go for ~4+. If you find one for under 1k, it's a steal. Assuming it isn't in terrible shape.
There are several links out there if lists as to what to look for when buying one, just do a search. I'm going to warn you to take a look at the sheetmetal underneath the storage bins and check for rust. It has a bad habit of hiding there. Good luck on the hunt.

Hey, I saw your post last night and i have to admit I was too tired to respond...Sorry. Also just as a note, if you notice, the posts in our forum dont "move" as quickly as in the other forums. Look at the total number of posts...We're the underdogs here . Anyway, my dad bought a 1985 GSL-SE with a 13B engine for $1,000. It has some fender damage that we can easily repair by replacing the fender, but other than that, its a good car. I can honestly say the when i looked at the engine for the first time i said "how is an engine that big going to be fast?" My dad just smiled at me and then we went for a drive. To this day i can honestly say that i have more fun riding in his car than any other car i have been in (including my friends Dads S2000). I was more impressed by the cars ability to "get up and go" than anything else. The torque that throws you back into the seats is quite amazing for how small the engine is. I hope that this may have helped you somewhat in your decision to buy a car. Also, like rx7gslse said, there is a problem with rust under the stroage bins behind the seats, and the GSL-SE is the only car that has a 13B (unless it was swapped in) and was only produced in 85-85. And to answer you question, in my own opinion, i think the 13B is/was the best engine used in the RX-7. Some people may debate this due to the fact that its fuel injected and not carborated, but that another story. As far as i know they run strong and they last for a while (at least ours has). So if that helps great, if not, oh well . Whichever you decide just be sure to have fun!
~T.J.
PS - IMO, I think that the best year/model to get would be an 84/85 GSL-SE if you can find one (which it seems you have )

Just a note, the forum is not a Answer on Demand service. One thing that must be learned with owning an RX-7 is patience.
I finished working on a friends RX-7 at 7am this morning, yup thats right an all nighter!
its also a weekend, alot of people spend it working on thier car, not typing!
ok, enough ranting
big thing like they say is check for rust in the wheel wells.
here are some pics of how bad it can get

check both inside and outside, dont be affraid to get dirty!
the GSL-SE is IMHO the best to hop up, its already got the beefier suspension, brakes, larger displacement, EFI, its very similar in power to the 2nd gen motor, and in a lighter car.
And the best of all, the first gen'ers around here are a bunch of nice guys, maybe not the quickest answers, but we wil answer, and give good advice.

Yah, it takes us a lil' while to respond, but patience rewards
It's so hard to say what to look for vs. what not to look for... granted it would be nice to pick up a GSL-SE in perfect shape for $300 but that won't happen, so you gotta look at the big picture... going by 2nd-gen standards if you could pick up a ratty T2 for the same price as a clean base model, the base model would be the better buy. Otherwise you end up driving around a big money pit. (Like my rust free but mechanically shot '76 'Bird) That said, for the money you're better off getting a car with a good body. Look for that over all - it is so much easier to fix mechanical problems than it is to fix body problems.

Hi.
Here's a FAQ about buying 1st and 2nd gens:
http://rx7.voodoobox.net/infofaq/bguide/bguide.html
It's what I used when I bought mine. Others have already mentioned the rust, which can be a big problem. Do all the normal car things like testing everything on the instrument panel, the lights, etc. I've spent quite a bit of time trying to fix little things that I didn't pick up when I bought my car and the 1st gens can have these problems because of their age.
One good suggestion that I read somewhere was to take along a sheet of cardboard, take the car for a test drive, and then park it over the cardboard for a while. This should help you to see if there are any current oil leaks, as it will fall on the card and be obvious. If I had done this I might have noticed the leaking diff.
Bye,
