SE died, warning lights came on, tach needle kicked up. Starts for a few seconds.

I was thinking about that intermittent ignitor and wondering how I got it. Most of my spare ignitors came from cars at the junkyard, and I was always inclined to suppose that the ignitor was OK because the car was probably there because it was wrecked. But now I'm guessing that one of those cars was in the JY because the owner/mechanic couldn't get it running on account of a bad ignitor. How sad, that an RX-7 was junked for such a small thing.

That is likely to be true. The mechanic probably couldn't find the problem, told the owner that it needed a new engine, and the car was junked because the owner couldn't afford the new engine. It has been my experience that most of the 7s that I have seen in the JY are not even wrecked..no damage to the body or anything. I suspect that the majority of them met an early death due to the lack of understanding of those funny rotary engines.

...and it's not even peculiar to the rotary. It has nothing to do with Wankel. All cars have ignitors now. Could happen to anyone, but with a rotary people are ready to condemn. With any other car they are willing to find a bad ignitor. this very SE I was able to get cheap because the owner probably thought it needed a com[plete $4000 overhaul, but all it needed was cleaning up and the coolant seal temporary fix.
