Scared the crap outta me!
Okay, so here's the story. Thought I blew my damn engine tonight!
Take a right turn, redline through 1st, 2nd, and hard into 3rd gear. Brake hard for a right hander and downshift to 2nd (heel & toe, of course
) . Get through the corner and I look in the mirror to see clouds of thick blue/white smoke, and I mean a thick cloud! Bring the revs up through 2nd gear and after a few seconds she stopped smoking and seemed fine.
Coming up to my house, I downshifted again to reproduce the effect and sure enough, another cloud. Park the car and jump out and the smoke is still coming out of the exhaust pipe. Take a whiff and its definitely fuel. Big sigh of relief, because at least its not oil or water!
Any idea on what's going on? Seems if I'm going hard, then let off, I can get the cloud of fuel smoke. Improper float adjustment? Maybe I should just stick a spark plug in my tailpipe to spark it off. LOL.
It was kind of embarassing when it first happened, because I had just dusted an eclipse, and then left him in a cloud of smoke a minute later. He was probably laughing, thinking I blew my motor. It really sucked.

I have heard that when these motors start getting a lot miles on them, they can do exactly as you describe. Big cloud of smoke from the tailpipe when you jump out of the throttle at high RPM's, but quickly clears up.
Your sig says "190,000 miles..." perhaps the oil control seals are starting to show their age. The beehive oil cooler is said to accelerate the demise of these seals, due to higher oil temp.
My 83 GS has almost 192,000 on the odometer, but I have been told the engine appears to have been rebuilt at some time in the past. Hopefully, I will not see the same type of situation anytime soon, cause it's just way too fun driving it.

Does it smoke on start-up when it sits for a few days? Does it have the pollution control equipment removed or not functioning?
I have 186,000 on my '79 and the EPA gives pollution alerts when I downshift after thrashing it.
Sounds like oil control rings to me.
BTW, my car has been doing this for years. No worry.

Wrong year. ???
Aren't you in the wrong forum? 1985GS = 12A motor. SAME as a 1979 12A.
Kentetsu: It probably is your oil control rings, but the really strong fuel smell is probably also because you are running too rich. One thought...maybe some sort of additive in the oil would help recondition the seals a bit if they are not too far gone. HTH.

Thanks for the thoughts guys, but this is definitely NOT OIL. Car runs fine otherwise, and no smoke at startup other than fuel smoke due to a choke problem. No choke = no smoke.
Not sure what is happening, but there was no trace of an oil smell. Actually, the first time this ever happened was when I ran SeaFoam through the gas tank. Not sure if that's related, but that is when it started doing it. There has not been any SeaFoam in the tank for the last 5 or 6 tankfulls.
