Safe way to remove botched paint on stereo surround?

Is there a safe way to remove paint form plastic? Lets just say that the paint did not turn out too good on the stereo surround... So it needs to be removed.

I have heard the brake fluid might work, any ideas?

Its the big stereo surround from a 84 GSL

Carb cleaner? Not really sure what would work without harming the plastic. Can you just paint over it?

3M makes scotch pad sanding pads. The rust colored ones are around 400 grit, the gray 600+. Buy them at the local autobody paint supplier.
