um.. depends. do you want to catch your car on fire? the combustion cycle goes into the manifold and is probably shooting flames out the manifold. other than that, i odnt see why it would be bad for it, youd probably loose power since theres no backpressure, at all. but ive heard of people starting rotaries up open block.
...But the flames keep the gremlins from attaching to the bottom of the car.....
All I notice, is a bit of lost power throughout the revs. All I have is the stock collector, and whats left of the thermal reactor. I can't imagine straight pipes would be any more hazardous, or lacking in power than that.

I don't know if this is an issue but could you overcool the rotors? without any exhaust you would lose alot of heat.
I did this for a couple days and it made me pretty nervous thinking about my car burning down with me in it.

first time I ever started up my '79 was with an '83 manifold bolted to it, and nothing after it. Just the 14' long manifold... that was DAMN loud.... not to mention that the idle was stuck at around 3000rpm...
this was at school, so everyone came out to see what the noise was

When we rushed in my 12A streetport, it was 3 in the morning, started it up with out even a manifold and you could hear car alarms, dogs, cats and people yelling. Not to mention all the things falling off of the sleves in the garage, but it sounded nice with the disticnt noise you get from a nicly ported 12A. but my ears hurt.
