safe launching RPM's from a stop
Visualize this....At a stoplight....Honda pulls up beside you and you want to make him run home to mommy with his tail between his legs.
So the question is what is a good rpm to dump the clutch and not have excessive wheel spin and not rip all the teeth off your transmission gears?
Completly stock 85 GSL-SE FI 13b

I would say, 1500 rpm at about quarter throttle up to 35 mph, where you maintain the speed. What would that prove? Maturity, safety, intellegence; that you aren't a dumbshit street racer trying to demonstrate your manhood..er, boyhood. If you want to race the Honda owner, *walk* over to his car and challenge him to meet you at a dragstrip or autocross course, where you can have an honest contest conducted in a safe manner. You will also have no excuses. And, when it's all said and done, you might even make a new friend...who might then wish to own an RX-7.

A long time ago, I heard that 6k RPM launches are ok. Try to keep tire slippage to a minimum with an educated foot. This is where you'll benefit from launching practice. Simply dumping the clutch is probably what your Honda friend is into. Don't be like a honda driver.
Of course the info I'm relaying to you is at least 10 years old and obviously can vary from car to car, so again, it's a good idea to practice to find out where your car is at its quickest off the line. The GSL-SE has some decent torque. Maybe 3k is best? You'll find it.

Burning Oil-Grinding 3rd
My Honda or My 7 I take them to about 3K and then Slip the clutch to launch, into the throttle more as the clutch comes up and regulate to rid wheel spin.

Yeah, shutup kid.
You'll get the fastest launch with a stock 7 by slipping the clutch at 5000-6000. Slip the clutch quick enough that you hear your tires, but not so quick that you spin 'em.

We have a winner. The RPM can vary +/- 500 depending on the tires and outside temps.

ok, I have owned my car since april and have yet to have ::any:: tire spin... why you ask? because surely a gsl-se can easily burn rubber, right? Yeah... well, I like my clutch. I like it a lot. It works well, and has not given me any trouble. I like to reward it for doing such a good job. BUT, I also like to have fun every once in a while (I was known to completly abuse my 2nd gen, and there are many black marks on the ground (Still, after months) in the parking lot where I used to have some fun... But what i want to know is, if I were to rev pretty high (above 3500) and then dump, or slip the clutch, just how bad for the clutch is it? I really don't know, and don't want to hurt it. The 2nd gen already had 210k miles and I didn't really give a da*n, i was going to abuse it till it died (which i didn't manage to do cuz i hit a stupid curb before i had a chance). Anyway, just wondering how bad for the clutch it is to launch, either by dumping or slipping into gear from a high rpm. what do u guys think?

Mazda transmission and rear ends are decently strong for stock.
My stock S 5 speed was probably the fastest shifting tranny I have ever used.
I would launch full on at about 5000, 8K gas on shifts into 2nd and third and 7k on 4th.
I could hold up to most cars just because it could shift so damn fast. Only some basic mods back then, exhaust, fuel ect.
She was fast, and she seamed to hold up great. I pulled a lot of ****, almost hoping to break something so I could start on a the TII swap. they are strong.

maybe tomorrow i'll play a little bit...
i'm a tad worried about my clutch though, because ever since I got the car it always felt too weak for my likeing. I replaced both the slave and master cylinder, as well as the hydraulic lines, and it STILL feels weak to me. when i drove my mom's honda accord, I felt like my leg was getting a workout on the clutch, and I like that feeling... anybody else able to compare their clutch to the honda accord (2001ish)? Just wondering if it's something I should look into further...

Wanna talk about a stiff clutch?
I drove a 1964 Pontiac GTO for a while.
When I got into my accident with her, I was downshifting to slide away from the bastard (didn't work, just like my MIND at the time )
When my foot slipped off the clutch, it scraped the skin off my shin. Know why? I had to use almost my whole strength to push that sucker in!
So, go drive an over powered muscle for a while. Then you'll REALLY appreciate that smooth *** clutch of yours

for the record, i went out and had a bit of fun in the seven... revved up to 6k, dropped the clutch, spun the wheels for about 4 seconds. quite fun
but i still feel bad for my clutch, so I won't abuse it much more. (but it really was friggin cool)
