Unhappy SA Sunroof? Aftermarket?

Okay, so I go all the way to Deleware to pick up a Glass sunroof from an 84 GS (And got a damn speeding ticket on the way home on account of my not having a Radar detector. ) at a price I couldn't refuse...

Anywhozer... Upon seeing it, I don't think it's right...

IIRC, my FB sunroof is a bit larger than the one I have, and the latch is different.

The one I have has a flat piece of glass with some brackets, plus a frame that goes around it with a latch... These all fit together as one unit, then there's a piece of trim that goes around the sunroof on the outside.

The glass is almost like a one way mirror. Very reflective.

I know the FB latch is integral to the car's body... But I have never seen an SA sunroof... I know they used a different style. Can people with SA's take a pic of theirs and show me (both in and out of the car), or measure length and width of their glass for me? Those of you with access to many RX-7's can you compare the stock FB sunroof to the stock SA sunroof. This is several inches shorter (front to back) than the stock FB sunroof.

I didn't personally take it off the car, but I was told it came off an 84 GS with an unknown history. Perhaps it's an SA sunroof grafted on, or it's an aftermarket one...

I got it from someone on this forum, and he seemed like a decent person, so I don't want to assume he ripped me off. He said he'd give me my money back if it was wrong.

Thanks in advance.

dont say SA , cause 80 is the same as 81

79 had a latch style, and a 80 up had a crank style roof, theres similar, but the 79 is definately distinguishable by the back where it clips in, also the front is different too, the front on a 80 up will have ears that kinda stick out, and a 79 will have these little rod looking things that dont stick out, its hard to explain, but easy to tell.. sorry I dont have a picture of the of the 79 roof anymore, BTW the glasses are the same size

OOOps also my 79 roof was black in tinted color, and my 85 is reflective as hell./.. if that helps

you said the key word, frame around it, that means you got the WRONG ROOF, theres no frame on a Rx-7 factory sunroof...

hmm.. I've seen a 79 with the same style roof... I don't know if it was factory or not, but it was definitely smaller, and it looked funny... didn't like it.

The 79 SA has the same size roof as the FB's. I've noticed a quite a few FB's with aftermarket sunroofs. When me and my buddy first found a parts car we thought that we hit a jackpot until we found out that it wasn't a mazda original roof

Yeah, I always thought the stock 79-85 roofs were all the same size, but the 82-85 roofs had the crank style latch and the 79-81 roofs had the folding latch style.

None of the factory roofs had trim of any sort around them... they were all glass, so I wouldn't touch that roof with a 10 foot pole; it's aftermarket.

Damnit. I spent 5 hours on the road to get it too... Looks like I've gotta go back to Delaware. I knew it was too good to be true.

Glass sunroofs are rare is ****, they go for over $200 on e-bay, plus shipping... This one was $75, so I jumped at it.

I thought that if it's from a 79, I could resell or trade it.

I'm sensing some confusion here. The '79s are the only ones that have a different latch mechanism like Mike-P-28 said. '80-'85 are have the same lifting mechanism, even though the '80s carry the SA designation. I just bought a perfect glass moonroof for my '80, and it came off an '83. Paid $20 for it from a guy I met at the gas station. Eat your hearts out!

ok, sorry greg, I was under the impression that they were the same from '78-81 from a comment that Mike-P-28 made:

But I guess I shoulda read the whole post

But the '79 is the latch style, and the 80 and up is the crank style.

I only have a '79, and I don't pay much attention to the differences between 79 and 80 models, and I thought that 81 and up are all the same, but I wasn't too sure.

The '79-'80 models had some additional bracing in the unibody that was done away with in the later models regardless of whether they had a sunroof or not.

thnx, awsome. i had bveen wondering about that for awhile now. so did they just figure that there was no loss fo structural rigity or not enough to make a difference and do away wiht the bracing.

not anuff to make a differance. there was also some structural differance in the floor between the firewall and the rear wheels in the 82+ not sure what though. thicker metal at the frame bend part of the unibody may be
