SA retractable head light - Help!

After working on the interior (carpet etc.) I turned on the lights but then when I turned them off, they won't retract back down. All the lights work fine and go on when the headlights come up. I have tested (and taken apart) the dash retractor switch and it works fine. I can get them to retract by jumpering the wires on either the dash switch or the headlight switch on the steering column although there are 4 wires on each switch and one of them doesn't seem to do anything on each switch. The fuesable link for the retractor switch works in the engine bay. Help! It's driving me nuts!

would the fusable links under the steering column have anything to do with it?

Check them and replace with block style ones. Cheap and easy assurance.

This happened to me just last night. There is a fusable link under the steering column , I believe it is the second or the third fuse on the bottom starting from the left side. It says it should be a 15A, but I replaced mine with a 20A since it popped on me twice already.

I thought there is just two fusable links. Are you meaning the fuses in the fusebox by your left foot?

thx for the replies.

Yup, by your left foot. If you happen to still have the cover for that fuse box, it will tell you which fuse controls what. Or if you don't happen to have one, check your FSM. It has it listed there as well.

Well that would be awesome if it was as simple as a fuse because the fusable links are hard to get at for some reason they are buried above the steering column. I did look at the fusebox before I made my post and didn't see anything for the retractable headlight. The lights etc are there, but they are all working, so that wouldn't be the fuse. Anyway, I'll check more closely.

One thing I did notice is that when I had the rocker (dash) switch unplugged another time, the headlights wouldn't retract using the steering column switch until I plugged the rocker switch back in so must be something to do with a completed circuit.

Any other opinions would be awesome. Other than that I'll keep troubleshooting.

Try the 3rd fuse up from the back on the left side of the fuse box. That fuse supplies power to the down circut on the headlight motors. Stock is 10 amps. Make sure the arms on the headlight assemblies are not jammed. Make sure the left arm is not against the battery. Momentary 12V to Red wires in plugs E-28 and E-29 (4 wire plugs at the headlight retractor motors) should put the lights down unless you have a grounding problem. The lights might also go down if you start turning the manual **** on top of the motors.

The fuses all looked o.k. until I took that one out. It fell apart.

Thanks so much for the input guys!
