Sa, Fb, Fc, Fd ???

I'm a bit new to the craft so please be patient while I ask questions for what seems to be common knowledge here.

What are those acronims you guys keep using? Is SA the 79-80 models, FB 81-85, and so on? I'm guessing by reading between the lines for a few days. Where do these names/acronims/code numbers come from?

It refers to the VIN numbers by year. The original RX-7 was prior to standardized VINs, so it was introduced with Mazda's own code of SA (e.g. SA22C900001 ). Once standardized the VINs changed to FB as the model designation within the code, as in JM1FB331XB0900001. When the models changed to the 2nd generation, the FB changed to FC, and so on.

You can read more about it here: http://www.rotorhead.ca/ref_VIN.php
