S5 NA Transmission into an 82 GSL? (Yeah, I searched)

Yeah, I searched... but, NA, FB, and S5 are too short to search for.. .so "Transmission swap" returns such vague and ridiculous results...

I did find a bunch of posts about TII transmissions, 86-88 transmission, etc..

I do know that an S5 NA transmission can be swapped into an S4.. so, except for the S5 cross member and shift **** threads.. they should be the same.

Here's the reason behind the post:
I just got given an 82 GSL. The clip thing that holds the shifter in broke off, so I either need to pull it, take apart the rear shifter assy and put the one from my spare S5 NA transmission in, or... I can swap the entire S5 NA transmission in.

Is this possible? Will I need to notch the tranny tunnel?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

What clip? The shifter is held in by a top cover that has 3 bolts. There is an internal wire spring, but all that does is return the shifter to center when in neutral. Most of the tranys I've removed shifters from, that spring has broken.

The FC shifter position is about 1" farther back, iirc. There is a writeup on installing/mods needed to install FC NA trannys in a 1st gen in the archives, again, iirc.

On my old FC, when that spring broke, the shifter would pop out when you pushed the shifter into 5th or R. IIRC, the FC trannies and FB trannies shifting box works the same.... but.. I haven't taken it apart to look at it.. the PO just said the clip/spring was broken, so... I'll have to investigate.

Didn't see the writeup.... but. All I did was search. I'll check the archives. (I should know better)

Thanks.

Okay.. have you guys read the archives? All of the posts referring to transmission swaps...

...Do not have pictures anymore - they have since been deleted.

...Do not have any detailed information on how/why/what can be/needs to be done.

...All refer to TII transmission and do not say if it'll work on S4/S5 NA transmission.

So... back to the thread. Will this work?

Mods for changing the shifer position/extension housing are basically the same for the TII/NAs. The tailshaft assembly can be swapped out between the FB and S4 NA trannys instead of modding the shifter. I'm not sure if the same can be done on the S5 trannys.

Huh... well.. I'll look into it... maybe I'll bump tomorrow when people are awake.. you know.. unofficially.. since people don't like bumps in the technical section.

From what I know the S5 NA is longer. I know I have one in my garage standing next to two 12A trannys. The mount is obviously different. And I tried putting the 12A driveshaft in the S5 and it won't go in. So I don't see how people are saying just change the rear housing and your good. Unless good to people is not being able to use a driveshaft and having to have a custom one built. Maybe I'm stupid but I just went through this exact deal your describing and found that the shifter tunnel hole would have to be notched for the S5 NA tranny to fit no problems but then teh drive shaft still doesn't work. That is all I know of this since nobody knows for sure apparently. I love you goodbye.............

^^ Thanks!

I know the S5 isn't any longer than the S4... but its definitely longer than the 12A trannies by an inch or so... according to several threads... so.. swapping the shifter assy seems like a viable solution... but.. yeah, there's still the issue of the driveshaft. Oh well. maybe I'll just get another used 12a tranny

save yourself a lot of trouble and just go buy a fb tranny.
or better yet trade your s5 tranny for an fb one.

The Fb housing will not work on the S5 because the bearings are larger on the S5. You would have to do too much work to make it work.

Thanks, doc, I knew there was a reason the S5 trannys wouldn't work, wasn't sure what it was.

LOL, I know we're both getting older, and forgetful. It's Scott btw. Back will always be a problem, just have to deal with it.
