S4 NA 6port keg into FB?
Hey all,
I had a question for any who can answer this:
I have an S4 Na motor that is not going anywhere any time soon.
I would like to get opinions on a swap into my 1981 FB.
I would like to go carbed just to keep it simple, but I want to put my feelers out to see if a Mega squirt and the stock EFI components would work on the FB.
I believe that I would need to use a GSL-SE front cover I think?
This is just a quick series of questions.
I had a buddy build the motor out to a pretty neat little package. Smashed rear oil pressure regulator, Turbo 2 oil pump, Hardened stationary gears, 74` spec port on primaries, and just about a standard street port on the secondaries along with newish injectors, and Finally Pineapple racing aux port sleeves.
Just wanted to see if it is worth incase my current keg did pop I hope not lol..
Thanks much,
-Tim

6 port n/a in 1st gen
tim,
I have the package you are talking about in my 84 gs. to install the engine you need the gsl-se front cover and oil pan and pick up tube. I also used the racing beat front engine mount.
Now if you want to go carbed you will need the r b upper intake manifold and a good side draft. I used a Dellorto 48, nice choice but jets take a while to get as they come from the UK, but i have done a lot of tuning on these and when set up correctly they work really nice. All my card specs can be found on Gruntled.com - Home. Webber is also a nice choice and parts are easier to get but tuning is a little harder to get correct.
AS for going injected, I have some knowage about it that but there are others on the site who could give you better insight as to mega squirt and how to set it up. I love carbed, the intake noise is awesome to hear.
hope this helps

Depending on your preference, carb or efi will work equally well. Ive done this swap with an Edelbrock carb and the stock S4 efi and I would say getting the efi running was easier than getting the carb in tune. There is plenty of good info on this site on getting the wiring right for efi.
Megasquirt is a good option, not too expensive and much more tunable than the stock s4 efi system but as far as I know some sensors will need to be changed out for similar parts from GM as the megasquirt is not compatible with the output of the RX7 sensors. These sensors are cheap though so they add very little cost. I havent actually installed and tuned a megasquirt though.
For cost effectiveness, I would go for stock EFI if it were me. Second would be a used carb setup, third megasquirt. Megasquirt would make the most of the engine I think wih carb being a close second. Stock EFI may hold it back more.
