pinoyremix, what type of clutch do you have? Mine currently has a stock '83-'85 flywheel (matches the rotating assembly) and stock 225mm disc and pressure plate. Lately I've been thinking of trying a Racing Beat light steel flywheel (it's thicker and heavier than the super light one pictured in this thread). I'll reuse the disc and pressure plate because they seem to be working ok on the stock flywheel. They used to shudder a lot in the white car, but I suspect glazing and there was something about the white car that allowed very easy shuddering, probably due to old lateral arms or whatever they're called in the rear. Well, the disc has worn away any glaze it may have had thanks to the semi rough old rusty pressure plate and flywheel. They looked good aside from some surface rust, so I shined them up with a spinning disc of coarse scotchbrite material and used them. I'll scotchbrite the light steel flywheel and observe the driveability. This will be the last chance to test these things before it goes into the GLC.

i honestly dont know what kinda clutch i have i believe its only a stage one...jeff at mazda's only bought it and put it in my car..it was $210 on the receipt....oh yah..in the fs thread there is a rb pressure plate for sale..

I'm doing an EFI conversion.

I got a rusty GSL-SE tank. At first glance I think I can use the POR 15 treatment on it.

Interestingly it looks like that aluminum flywheel only works with 215mm discs. The super light steel flywheel pictured earlier also only works with 215mm discs.

I'll be using the RB light steel flywheel on the S model. The RB ones have a wear surface that is large enough to accept 225mm discs. You just need to get the 225mm bolt set from Racing Beat. It contains longer bolts with spacers. Mazda added a step in '83 to the pressure plates to keep the 225mm components from working on the earlier 215mm flywheels. All you have to do to defeat this is to get the bolt set from RB, a 225mm disc and pressure plate and it should fit on a 215mm STOCK flywheel. It looks like you can't do this on the aftermarket 215mm flywheels because the wear surface is exactly 215mm, not 224/225 like on the stock ones. I did this recently and it was a tight fit. Check it out.

Stock 215mm flywheel. Notice it looks like an '81-'82 which is the lightest 1st gen flywheel, but there is no number on it. Makes me think it came from a nitrided R5 13B or a 12A from Japan. See the balance holes? Somebody balanced the rotating assembly. They drilled into the front counterweight too.

RB HD disc and street strip or race pressure plate (it's a really stiff pedal and very grabby). All in 225mm.


Here's how to make it work. You just use the spacers and long thin bolts.

We had to grind some metal from this part, but in the end it probably wasn't necessary.

Back to the S model.

I pulled the RB dual pipe exhaust the other day. Even with all the rust inside, I think it survived. It was kinda noisy with the stock '81-'82 muffler because it was never desinged to handle a header with long primaries. You could walk along the car and it sounded fine until you got to the stock muffler connection. Everything rearward sounded tinny and dumb. The real test will be with a real RB muffler of course.


I pulled the stock tank today. It's in exceptional shape. Almost a shame to sell it for just $200 shipped, but I already have a buyer.

Jeff, you won't be dissapointed in your clutch set up. I put the RB HD clutch in my S with stock flywheel and pressure plate and was still very pleased.

I figured since I was going to be driving this thing all the time on the street, I'd better not get an HD disc. Of course if it's still too soft, I can upgrade to the HD disc later. It's not a big deal. I'll have to redo the exhaust at some point anyway, so while it's out I could do the clutch too.

pinoyremix, the RB exhaust belongs to Tom (you met him at Taco7). I'll let him know.

I looked into the exhaust ports of the EFI engine the other day and discovered it needs a rebuild. The apex seals are sloppy. They're the stupid stock 3 piece 2mm seals. A little planned obsolescence on Mazda's part. Good thing I caught it before they broke.

Maybe I'll hold off on the disc and pressure plate until after the engine is rebuilt. I gotta get some 2 piece 2mm seals.

The RB HD clutch is extremely streetable. I drove it daily for a few months before I parked her. I would honestly maybe hold on the pressure plate and go with the disc. But that's just my opinion and I know you'll be very pleased no matter what route you go!

My main motivation for wanting to get a new clutch is the weak pedal of the stock pressure plate. The disc can stay stock. I guess we're opposite.

The light steel flywheel is far more sensitive to the type of disc you use, so that's another reason. My bro's GSL-SE flywheel in the RX-4 got an HD disc and street strip pressure plate and it was streetable. It probably would have been harder to drive with a light steel flywheel.

PercentSevenC and I pulled the 12A yesterday from the S model. It'll get the super light steel flywheel pictured earlier in this thread. The best home for it right now would be the GLC.
