I believe a 12A wouldn't work on a 13B only because of the different flywheel.

I was told they're interchangeable, and I hope it's true 'cause I got a $15 12a starter to swap into my 13b when I get the enthusasm to go under for the swap.

What, the starters or the flywheels?

Not to rain on your parade, but look at Mazdatrix page on flywheels. Notice 12As and 13Bs are separated.

The 12A starter will work fine. I have used on in the past on my SE. The Mazda parts microfiche also list just one number for '85 manual transmission cars.

The only differences are between the auto and manual starters. The starters for the auto transmission cars are a gear reduction drive so it is easy to tell the difference visually. Either one of the starters that you listed appear to be from a manual transmission car, so either one should work.

I believe the only difference is the cranking speed. Because of the difference in flywheels they used different teething on the starter to accomidate for that. You may crank faster, or slower, but should work i beliefve
