Hello guys im kinda new here,im purchasing a 85 12a 1st gen and need to know what i need to look into make sure engine is good,,it has 140,000 miles..i have an rx3 my self with a turbo II engine holy and the engine is good is been sitting a while since im going to be working on body,,is rusty,,it came from chicago my buddy had it for a while., just sitting,

anyways 2 questions,,

how can i check if engine is good on car im purchasing ??

and how long can i leave my engine sitting before i started is been sitting for a bit, about 6 months i took engine out to work on body,

if it cranks you can do a compression check

 

well car is running so it cranks, the 1st gen is running and my rx3 engine is sitting,witch one you want me to check

 

Which one are you wanting to check? I have left my engine sitting for over six months and it still started, and ran fine. I guess it just depends on the state of the engine as well as how and where it was stored.

 

Check for oil leaks as im sure you know, oil pan, under beehive, near omp, near "12A Mazda" imprint on engine (dowel pin leak). Compression check on it. Check for rust under bins and fenders if possible. See if steering is decent.

As for oil, oil starvation = dead engine

If it's running and does not smoke that's bout as good as you can hope for 140k.

[COLOR="Red"]well On my rx3 engine has been sitting in my garage for about six months and about once a month a turn engine, well is off car so i just turn it with wrench and it sounds like good compression, was rebuilt about 3 years ago and it has been good, and last time i started was about a year ago

and on car im looking im checking it outt sunday morning well tomorrow morning ,,it runs and he said the previous owner sold it to him cuz someone put sugar in gas tank, he says that he clean gas tank but that when car is low in gas you can feel car jurk,,he said he has 2 fuel filter,,but that i need new tank,,
by what i understand, people tell me to check car very early in morning before car is warm if it starts right up engine good,that their is enough compression in it , will see ,,if any more info please let me know,thanks,again,

 

Yea definetly try and do a cold start and let it warm up (cold start meaning just not have warmed up, early in morning or late at night or a surprise visit so they cant warm it up pre u getting there)

Why did he put sugar in the tank?

 

Sugar will normally ruin an engine.

How much is he asking for it? This sounds like beater price range (free - $1000).

 

sugar will only clog up fuel filters. sugar will not dissolve in gasoline.

 

well thanks guys , I stopped at his house early at 9 am called him from outside,

He pulled choke pump gas tiwce and it started right up , he said he has not

started car about a week .Why cuz it started to smoke white.it smoked white for

2 minutes then it stopped. engine sounded reall good and no smoke at all even

6500 rpm it didnt smoke, my cousin and my boy in PR said it could be (spanish

word) sereno meaning like humidity and that all cuz it never did it again, i havent

bought car cuz ,he put new clutch and i guess now clutch pump went bad,I heard

is comen, let me know what you think, thanks again.

and i got him down to 950 but i think im going to tell him 800..pretty good

condition, florida car so no rust only 2 small one by back lift window, and someone

else did the sugar in tank,previous owner had some enemies i guess. .

 

I'd look at those rust spots near the hatch very carefully. Open the hatch and pull up the rubber seal. If its glued on it shouldn't be. The metal rim under this seal is prone to rusting away if the drain holes are not cleaned regularly. If the lip has rusted away water can run into the car instead of out the drains like it should.

And It Has A Rebuilt Engine, Great Hu. Well Anyways I Should Be Posting

sounds like a good deal if it runs well and was 250 bucks. Even if the engine was all that was good on it id still call it a good deal.
