RX-7 Stalls in Summer!

85 RX-7 GS 12A Carb. Engine Approx. 110k miles.

Problem: My rx-7 has developed a 'summer only' problem that is about to drive me crazy! It must be heat related, but here is the scenario almost every time; Hot summer day, drive car fairly hard, stop for a quick stop (10 minutes or less) - get a drink or something - restart car and within 2 minutes car quits!! No warning, just stops. The car has to sit for at least 1 hour before it will restart. Restarts like nothing ever happened. It has happened at least a dozen times over the last 3 or 4 years and I have decided to fix it this summer. Took it to the dealer and they wanted to replace clutch!!!!! I may not know a lot about this car but I am not stupid! Never has stalled prior to making stop and shutting engine off for a few minutes. Very odd. No warnings, no lights, no buzzers, just quits. I suspect something controllling fuel or spark is the culprit. I have done all the simple stuff like filters, plugs, wires, caps, etc. but have not changed coils or fuel pump yet. Any suggestoins out there?

sounds like vapor lock. I have never heard of a first gen suffering this, but have heard of other cars. make sure the fuel lines are routed well away from any heat source, ie heater hose, exhaust. And make sure your carb heat shield is there and functional, finally change the petrol you are running.

Yep. Is your fuel lines next to something really hot? Your fuel might be boiling and causing the vapor lock.

My 80 used to that **** all the time! Drove me nuts, but when I rebuilt the motor and changed out to a newer carb it didnt do it anymore... Not saying its the motor, it is probally in fine running shape... Id say look at the other suggestions, including maybe a carb rebuild?

Get rid of the altitude compensator and check the sensors.
